  1. Almost 11 hours until the game starts and we're already on page 3 of the IGT! In this thread, on Monday, I said that I was enjoying the respite from baseball but that my patience would run out by today, and I was right! How am I going to get through a day at the office? I wish I could put myself into suspended animation until 7:30 this evening.
  2. Is it true that Showalter deferred using his closer until a "save situation" developed and he never ended up getting into the game? It's nice to be reminded that Terry isn't the only manager who does that (it's one of my biggest pet peeves) and hopefully so much scorn will rain down on Showalter that managers will stop doing this. At least, that Mets managers will stop doing it.
  3. I guess he likes scrapbooking bears. Who can blame him? Anyway, has anyone noticed that Madison Bumgarner has a girl's first name? I bet he has a brother named Catherine!
  4. Was Hunter Pence bitten by a werewolf recently?
  5. I don't care about the Cubs yet either. Fiddle Dee Dee! I'll worry about them tomorrow.
  6. Well, Terry is certain to be invited back. Maybe what he needs is a really smart bench coach. I remember after Jerry was fired Chip Hale was the guy I was rooting for to get the manager job. I think I'd welcome him back as a bench coach.
  7. I'm wondering if one of the "extra" position players will be a third catcher, meaning Plawecki. When does the roster get announced? I seem to think it's tomorrow at noon. Is that right?
  8. Vic Sage wrote: isn't Colon going to start game 1 of an NLCS, if they get that far? I'd think they'd prefer to have him fresh for that game, rather than coming in the pen. Lugo won't be used for quite a while and has relief experience. I think, if they're going to go with 1 starter in the pen, it'll be Lugo over Colon.. or am i missing something? wouldn't be the first time. My understanding was that it would be Gsellman in the pen instead of Colon. If not Gsellman, I would think Lugo. But it's possible that they'd go with the more experienced Colon (he'd only be used in an emergency anyway) and if they did use him, and they won, Gsellman or Lugo would pitch Game 1 of the NLDS and, I suppose, Colon could pitch Game 2.
  9. Voting for all remaining games from the 2016 regular season will close next Tuesday, October 11, some time after 7 a.m. REMINDER: Schaefer voting is for regular season games only. There will be no Schaefer voting for tomorrow's game against the Giants nor for any additional games that the Mets may play in October.
  10. Reading that definition makes me wonder what would happen if a batter came to the plate without pants? The strike zone would have a lower limit but no upper limit. Does that mean that there would be no strike zone, or would the upper portion stretch to infinity? If it's the latter, that would solve the mystery regarding why all batters seem to wear pants.
  11. Here's the official definition of the strike zone: The STRIKE ZONE is that area over home plate the upper limit of which is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoul- ders and the top of the uniform pants, and the lower level is a line at the hollow beneath the kneecap. The Strike Zone shall be determined from the batter’s stance as the batter is prepared to swing at a pitched ball. I would interpret "area over home plate" to mean that it's three-dimensional. The top and bottom is determined by the batter's size and stance, but the left, right, back, and front is shaped like home plate.
  12. Yeah, it would have to be 3D. If it's only 2D it will be terribly inadequate.
  13. You'd know more about that than I would! I don't think I can name any of the married Indians either.
  14. Maybe we can ask Bumgarner to throw with his right hand? After all, that's what Syndergaard will be doing!
  15. Hodges wasn't a first-timer; he had been managing the Washington Senators.
  16. I voted Indians. I like that they're one of the old-school franchises and that the Mets haven't played them in a World Series. This has nothing to do with the players, or how they'd match up with the Mets. I have no idea. I don't think I can name a single Cleveland Indian.
  17. Didn't we learn that Duda wasn't feeling well on Sunday? I think his back stiffened up? If he's still having issues, then his health may figure into the decision; he may not even be on Wednesday's roster.
  18. That's why I say the strike zone would have to be locked in before the pitch is delivered.
  19. Frayed Knot wrote: 3 - Is it adjustable (and, again, instantly adjustable) per batter? You can never tell when watching a game where the carrier superimposes the (unofficial) 'box' on screen whether said box changes for each batter and, let's face it, Aaron Judge and Jose Altuve don't have anywhere near the same strike zone. But the makers (and presumably the operators) of this technology claim to be able to pre-set the upper and lower limits of the zone for existing players and would have the ability for adjust on the fly for new batters and/or changed stances. I imagine they can put some kind of tag or tape or something on the players' uniforms, at the chest and the knees, that can be detected by the strike zone device. It would have to lock in the strike zone as the pitcher delivers so it doesn't get thrown off by any movements the batter may make as the ball crosses the plate.
  20. Zvon wrote: So is the WC an extra regular season game or the 1st game of the post season? Yes, it's a postseason game. Did you somehow miss all the excitement about the Mets being in the postseason?
  21. I don't know. I'm enjoying the respite. I didn't watch any of yesterday's game, and I'm glad not to have anything to worry about today either. I'll probably start getting a little antsy tomorrow and getting through the day on Wednesday will be a challenge.
  22. Gwreck wrote: The Mets haven't had a daytime start for a playoff game since Game 1 of the Division Series in 2006; and that was only because the Yankees had a home playoff game at the same time. I think they had a couple of weekend day games in 2000 in the Division Series. If I remember correctly, Game 6 of the 2015 NLCS would have been an afternoon game, but thankfully it wasn't necessary. In 2006 I remember taking more than one day off from work. If they only played one day game, however, the other day off may have been so I could catch up on my sleep!
  23. Interesting. I was wondering how they would do it. They're aiming the Chicago game (with New York as the possible opponent) at prime time, while the other major market, Los Angeles, will get a 2:30 p.m. start on Friday. At least I know I won't have to take a day off on Friday.
  24. Rooting for Davey, against Steinbrenner, McGwire, and Selig. Indifferent to all the others.
  25. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: 3. We gotta get Buttgardener off the mound asap. Yes. And it won't be easy to do this by running up his pitch count as you might in a regular season game against a 23-year-old pitcher. They'll probably let him throw 130 or 140 pitches if necessary.
