  1. There have been six seasons in which the Mets didn't have a player making their Mets debut in the first game of the season. In 1983 (Danny Heep) and 1986 (Bob Ojeda), the first Mets debut didn't occur until the second game of the season. In 1976, we had to wait until the third game. (Mickey Lolich) In 1977, it was the fifth game. (Luis Alvarado) In 1988, it took six games. (Mackey Sasser) But in 1974, the Mets didn't add a new player to their all-time roster until the 60th game of the season, on June 16, when Jack Aker made his debut.
  2. I wonder, when he signs his checks, does Ed Kranepool write "1965 All-Star"?
  3. I should have also asked about the Serena de Milo.
  4. She'll probably start batting her eyes at Wilmer Flores.
  5. It took me a while, but I was finally able to get in touch with someone at the Louvre. They assured me that, despite the violent incident that occurred outside the museum yesterday, the YES-PEDES cover is safe and undamaged. While I had them on the phone, I also asked about the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. They said that they haven't had a chance yet to check on them.
  6. I think that all he needs to do is grow his hair a little longer and he's in! It seems he may move quickly. Invited to major league camp... I wonder where he'll start the season? I would think Binghamton is most likely, but who knows? Maybe to ease his innings count he may see time in the bullpen. The Mets are a little short on lefty relievers. I don't think he'll make the jump directly from Single A to Queens, but he's 23 years old, so... maybe? (EDIT: I posted the above before I saw the news about Blevins returning.)
  7. I thought that maybe you were referring to this guy: It still seems very unlikely, but I'm starting to wonder if the 2017 Mets will challenge the record set by the 1988 club, where only four new players debuted for the Mets all season.
  8. I think that there would be rioting in Sweden.
  9. Sparse voting so far for the final round of this year's TCD. Are we losing interest in this thing just as it's about to end?
  10. And here's a much younger Shea Stadium:
  11. Yeah, I think that as soon as 41Forever makes his 42nd post, the bold text will go back to normal.

  14. I've seen the Mets on the road in Philadelphia (Veterans Stadium and Citizens Bank Park), Pittsburgh (PNC), Baltimore (Camden Yards), Atlanta (Fulton County), Seattle (Safeco), Washington (Nationals Park), and San Juan (Hiram Bithorn, vs. the Marlins). None of the games really stand out except for the most recent one, October 1, 2016 in Philadelphia, the game where the Mets clinched the Wild Card.
  15. My first game at Shea was a 1-0 loss to the Reds in 1971. Gary Nolan vs. Gary Gentry. The first time I saw them win was in my second visit, June 27, 1972, vs. the Pirates. It was Jim Fregosi's best day as a Met, with a 3-run homer and 5 rbi in a 7-4 win. I was hoping to see Roberto Clemente play, but he wasn't in the starting lineup and he didn't come in as a pinch-hitter either. (I seem to remember seeing him in the on-deck circle, but I can't be sure of that. Maybe I saw him out on the field before the game started.) My favorite Shea Stadium memory is easy: (Those aren't my actual tickets, although I was in the Upper Reserved. I was above first base, around Section 25.)
  16. Winner of Round 1.2.3 Winner of Round 2.2.2 Winner of Round 3.2.1 Winner of Round 4.2.1 Winner of Round 5.0.1 SEEDS OF LIFE New York Post, May 22, 2016. David Wright is showered with sunflower seeds after singling home the game-winning run in the 9th inning against the Brewers. Winner of Round 1.3.8 Winner of Round 2.3.2 Winner of Round 3.3.1 Winner of Round 4.3.1 Winner of Round 5.0.2 CES BOOM BAH! New York Daily News, August 30, 2016 Yoenis Cespedes hits a solo homer in the bottom of the 10th to give the Mets a 2-1 win over the Marlins.
  17. Bumping this to the next page. The final round of voting has begun this morning and will run for seven days. Our two finalists are SEEDS OF LIFE, from the New York Post, and CES BOOM BAH! from The Daily News. SEEDS OF LIFE is the first Post cover to advance this far. (Last year's final round was between two Daily News covers, YES-PEDES and CON4TO.) The two covers eliminated in Round 5 were METS IN A LANDSLIDE (Daily News) and 11th HEAVEN (Newsday). 11th HEAVEN made Derby history in two ways: As the first Newsday cover to advance to the Final Four and as the first cover ever to win a unanimous victory. It defeated the Daily News' ALL TO FAMILIA by a score of 15 to 0 in the second round. And finally, for being featured on the highest ranked Newsday cover, Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera will be awarded a year's supply of Rice-A-Roni (The San Francisco Treat), Turtle Wax (It gives a hard shell finish) and a copy of the Tabloid Cover Derby Home Game, available wherever fine toys and games are sold!
  18. It means that for twelve months, every time you ask for Rice-A-Roni, you'll get some for free! No questions asked!

  20. You should see if Bruce Boisclair still has any of the fan letters that your friend mailed to him in the late 70s. That will provide undeniable proof!
  21. When I was a kid, early 1970s, Smithtown, Long Island, just about every kid was a Mets fan, and a Tom Seaver baseball card was the Holy Grail. There were a couple of Yankees fans, but they were so rare they were looked upon as anomalies, like Protestants. (Almost everyone was either Catholic or Jewish. I remember being really surprised to learn that the majority of the country was Protestant.)
  22. I like that he didn't make any plans for October.
  23. The final round of voting begins tomorrow! The excitement... is palpable!
