  1. I didn't look at any names, just did a count. I'm enjoying these Countdown Quizzes, but here's a word to the wise that I've learned from doing Schaefer and dictated my approach for Tabloid Cover Derby: It's best to do the vast bulk of the preparation in advance. That way, when the "event" is playing out keeping it up doesn't become a burden. If you're going to post 32 questions on March 31 don't wait until March 30 to get them assembled!
  2. I'm curious to see what you do when we get down to lower numbers, like 3. Will you still go by number of at bats, or will you switch to a different statistic? There are 32 Mets who finished with exactly 3 at bats.
  3. Really? I guess it was a long time ago and I don't remember the details, but I recall Mike's promotion being nothing more than a favor to his brother. I could be wrong.

And how we feel about his departure if in fact it happens will be determined by how the next seven or eight months go. The 2018 infield could potentially look very different from 2017. Who leaves? Who comes back? It will be an intriguing story as the season progresses.
  5. The attention that he's getting doesn't bother me at all. He's not really on my radar and won't be until and unless it looks like he might contribute to the big league team. I hope the Mets resist whatever urges they may have to "Mike Glavine" him, by maybe giving him a token September appearance a couple of years from now. Players shouldn't be in the big leagues unless they earn it. (And hopefully they don't have any such urges at all.)
  6. I think the problem isn't actually with the pace of the game (although that's a factor) but the time that the games end, especially in the post season. I doubt that many people care what time a Wednesday night game in June ends. But in October, casual fans aren't watching the LCS and World Series games because they know that they'll have to go to bed before the game ends. The Super Bowl doesn't have this problem because it's a one-time event and it starts at 6 p.m. Eastern Time, 3 p.m. on the West Coast. I think much of this problem with baseball could be resolved by having post-season games start at 7 p.m. in the East. I know it would cause fans in the West to miss the beginning of some games, but I think viewers are more likely to watch a game where they see the last six innings than a game when they'll only see the first six.
  7. If he averages 7.6 strikeouts per inning then there are going to be an extraordinary number of passed balls.
  8. My expectations... are not high. I hope he surprises me. If he proves to be healthy, there's an excellent chance he'll be traded, either by July 31 or, more likely, over the winter.
  9. Does anyone know what the tattoo on Harvey's left breast says? Is it something about Qualcomm?
  10. He may never play in the major leagues, but some day that video of him catching the bat will be sent into outer space so that alien civilizations will be able to see what we're capable of.

I conflated the two, thinking that Jefferson went to Montreal in the Carter trade (maybe because of the presidential names) but Jefferson, I think, went to San Diego. For McReynolds?
  12. 2. Jorge Toca?
  13. 1. Stanley Jefferson?
  14. I'm thinking similar thoughts. I fully expect that he'll get more than 20 starts.
  15. It does have a certain amount of panache.
  16. I see that as we've moved from "F" to "G" in the alphabet, we've switching from "Foreseeing" to "Edge of" Anyway, Granderson has been a terrific Met, and I expect to always have fond memories of him. He's been forgiven for his Yankees taint. This is very likely to be his last year as a Met, unless some unforeseen circumstances lead the Mets to bring him back on a one-year contract for 2018. It's not likely, but possible.
  17. I know what "enormous phalanges" means, but it still sounds disgusting.
  18. 1. Ron Taylor?
  19. I was wondering the same thing: Kranepool’s not insured? Lincoln Park, N.J.: I read the story in the Daily News about former New York Mets first baseman Ed Kranepool needing a kidney transplant. As a Mets fan (and human being), I am very sorry to hear this awful news. The story infers his medical costs will be “out of pocket” and he is preparing to auction off his 1969 championship ring and other memorabilia. How does he not have, at age 72, Medicare and a supplement like the rest of us?
  20. This letter appeared in the Daily News today: An offer to a Met legend in need Bridgeport, Conn.: I saw your article on Ed Kranepool (“Beloved Mets legend on waiting list for kidney donor,” March 2). I, like most humans, have more kidneys than I need to survive. My blood type is A+ and I’m 34 years old (in good health). I know those are not the only requirements, but if we happen to be a blood type match, I will gladly look into donation procedures for Kranepool. If he is in the kidney exchange program, he may be waiting quite a while. I’m not sure if that’s time he can afford. I have a close cousin going through the same thing. My twin brother is a match, thank God, so I feel compelled to pay that good fortune forward. So, I figured that if I could be of assistance, I might as well find a way to take that step. Especially, if it helps a New York Met! Please let me know if there’s anything I can do. I’m a man of modest means, but it breaks my heart to picture his ’69 ring at auction.
  21. Check out this picture posted on the UMDB Facebook page this morning. It's a cartoon team drawing of the 1986 World Champs. Anyone recognize the cartoonist "McGrath" from anywhere? I can identify most of the players, but there are a few that I'm unsure of.
  22. I think they're tedious but I wouldn't want to artificially limit them.
  23. I saw that MLB and Game of Thrones have some kind of promotional alliance. I'm guessing we'll see Circe Lannister in a Yankees cap.
  24. sharpie wrote: The team that I don't know is the Padres, and they're in the National League. Other than Will Myers I can't name a current Padre. That's one more than me. The only Padre I can think of is the fictional Ginny Baker.
