  2. I just noticed that 125th Anniversary logo on the 1994 cover. 1994 was 24 years ago, so that means that next year is the 150th Anniversary of 1869, which is the year of the Cincinnati Red Stockings and the first professional baseball team.
  3. The fifth poll has now closed, and the 1963 cover has defeated the 2017 cover by a vote of 13 to 5. The following threads are currently open for voting: Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.06 1989 orig. vs 1991 orig. Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.07 1979 vs 2000 Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.08 1978 vs 2001 Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.09 1976 vs 2004 Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.10 1977 original vs 2003 Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.11 1987 orig vs 1992 Española Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.12 1985 vs 1994 ADVANCING TO ROUND TWO: ELIMINATED:
  4. Our first poll was close, but was followed by ten consecutive landslides. It looks like we may finally have another competitive poll. 1994 currently leads 1985 by a tally of 4 to 3. I went with 1985. A picture of a sleeve? Boring!
  5. Also, if you want to see the full bracket, check out page three of the Introduction thread. I'll post an updated version in that thread at the end of next week, when half of round one has been completed.
  6. Zvon wrote: So you're doing both versions when revised? Of course. In the past week, we've seen both versions of 1977, for example. Zvon wrote: Is it possible for a first print cover to go up against a revised cover of the same year? That would be interesting. Though we'll only see 63 matchups, all 2,016 are possible. Some are only possible in the first round, some only in the second, etc. But every matchup is possible. That's no longer true, of course, now that some covers have been eliminated and others are on the brink.
  7. It will be interesting to see if this leads to Lugo skipping his scheduled start.
  8. That Jeff Torborg and friends cover is in this competition, of course, and we'll get a chance to vote on it eventually.
  9. I've never seen any similarity between Matt Harvey and Batman, and have no idea why that name caught on. I do see how Noah Syndergaard can resemble Thor, but I've never embraced that nickname either. If I want to save on typing and refer to him with only four letters, I'll call him "Noah." That being said, while these superhero nicknames make me roll my eyes, I don't get worked up over them. If some fans think they're fun, then let it be. Although there is an argument that they may be having a detrimental effect on the players. I don't know if I believe that, but I do acknowledge it's possible. If Syndergaard's nickname was "Synderella" instead of "Thor" would he have bulked up the way he did last year? Would he have missed all those games? Who knows?

  11. 41Forever wrote: This might be the first shutout! Or perhaps the second. Don't forget yesterday's poll!
  12. The fourth poll of the first round has provided us with our biggest landslide yet, an 18-2 win for the 1970 cover over the cover from 2010. ADVANCING TO ROUND TWO: ELIMINATED:
  13. I'm not sure that this 1992 cover is actually a yearbook. It looks more like a magazine cover. It's also not clear that it was published by the Mets. But we needed a 64th cover to round out the field, and this is the one we have. The 1987 cover is a totally inadequate way to celebrate something as rare and precious as a World Championship, but it gets my vote because of the weakness of its competition.
  14. 1987 Original Edition 1992 Edición Española
  15. I wonder what today's date is?
  16. Why not just let the pitcher bat leadoff, that way you can really maximize his number of plate appearances.
  17. Cast your vote!
  18. This may be our first unanimous poll. I agree with the above. It was nice to see Jerry getting his due. It's a shame that this cover was short-lived, and replaced by that awful Torre cover in the revised edition.
  19. That 2003 cover may very well be the worst of the worst. I can't imagine what they were thinking. Art Howe may have lit up the room during his interview, but it seems that whoever composed this cover didn't think that Art, or anyone else for that matter, was worth highlighting.
  20. In yet another of what is promising to be a long string of lopsided victories, the 2002 cover has defeated the 1977 revised edition by a score of 13 to 5. Maybe Joe Torre should have shaved his wrists before the photo was taken. And someone should have told him to close his mouth. ADVANCING TO ROUND TWO: ELIMINATED:
  21. Schaefer for Swarzak!
