  1. If Nimmo was able to get them Andrew McCutchen, he should be able to get them J.T. Realmuto, right? Realmuto is 27, and under team control through the 2020 season.
  2. I don't particularly like the 1982 cover. I can tell it's trying to look like a Saturday Evening Post cover, but it comes across as a pretty poor imitation. I voted for 1982 anyway, because I prefer it to the gimmicky lenticular cover. It's not like it was new cutting edge technology, either. Wasn't Kellogg's and/or Hostess (I don't remember which) doing pretty much the same thing on baseball cards two decades earlier?

  4. Today's poll was the 22nd of the first round, which means we've been presented with 44 of the 64 covers that are participating in this competition. Tomorrow, the 16th poll closes, at which point we'll know half of our first-round winners. To mark this milestone, I'll be posting, in this thread, an updated graphic of the Yearbook Cover Derby bracket. Don't miss it! These are the threads that are currently open for voting: Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.16 1967 vs 2013 Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.17 1974 vs 2006 Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.18 1969 vs 2011 Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.19 1962 vs 2018 Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.20 1971 vs 2009 Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.21 1989 Española vs 1990 orig Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.22 1982 vs 1997 And, in the thread that closed today, the 1999 cover won a 16 to 3 victory over the 1980 "weird child" cover. ADVANCING TO ROUND TWO: ELIMINATED:
  5. They were 18 games over in 2015, and 12 over in 2016. Of course, prior to 2015 there were six consecutive seasons where they failed to win 80 games.
  6. Look at that launch angle!
  7. Yes, it's the first time ever. Last year was the first time they all pitched in the same season, but with Syndergaard out for so long, the five never got a chance to pitch consecutively.
  8. In the April 7 game, Jerry Blevins came in with one out and nobody on in the eighth inning, Mets leading 3-2. He walked Bryce Harper, and then left the game. By the most liberal definition of the rule, he would get a hold. The Baseball Reference box score does not give him a hold. Neither does the one on MLB.com.
  9. Yes! If Ramos had been less effective, he would have gotten a hold.
  10. 1. Me too. But I was simultaneously counting on the Mets finding a way no matter how grim it looked. There are times in Mets history when I have a lot of confidence in their ability to do what it takes. This is one of those magical times. Though the stakes were much higher, and the circumstances not exactly the same, I was reminded of how Bob Knepper was dominating the Mets in Game 6 of the 1986 NLCS. And how the Mets won anyway. 2. I'm not sure if letting Plawecki run was about saving the catcher or saving the bench player. I guess he could have let Nido run. My guess is that Mickey was being stingy with making replacements because he only has a four-man bench. And yes, I would have given Gsellman the ninth inning. It seemed like overkill to use Blevins for one batter when there's a three-run lead and nobody on base.
  11. You have to either pitch a full inning with a lead of three runs or less, come in with the tying run on deck (or at bat or on the bases) or pitch the final three innings, regardless of the score. So it was a save situation for Blevins, but not for Ramos.
  12. Voting for the first eight games of the season (against St. Louis, Philadelphia, and Washington) will close one week from today, on Thursday, April 19. If you're on the list below with an 8 next to your name, you're all caught up on the games that are about to close. If not, and if you're so inclined, please try to get your votes in over the next week. 14. Last night, Jerry Blevins got one out in the ninth inning with a three-run lead. He got credited with a hold. AJ Ramos then got two outs in the ninth inning with a three-run lead. He does not get credited with a hold. I know the reason: When Blevins came into the game it was a save situation, but when Ramos came in it wasn't. But Ramos, literally, did twice as much as Blevins did, but doesn't get the credit. This leads me to wonder, does anyone care about holds? Does the guy who leads the league in holds even realize it? Have I ever led the league in holds?
  15. They're not going to score any runs. Won't make it around the bases to home plate.
  16. Would they insist on a forthright Christian like Brandon Nimmo?
  17. It would. I wonder what it would take?
  18. I think Wheeler wins out over Lugo, unless his next start or the one after that is horrific. The real question to me is does Wheeler give way to Vargas when he returns and if the other four starters are all still healthy. In that event, I think Vargas is in the rotation, Wheeler is in the pen, and Sewald is in Las Vegas.
  19. The winner of this competition is fated to face the juggernaut that is Baby Met.
  20. It would be something to have too many starters this year (Vargas is still waiting in the wings) after the way last year went. It's early yet, of course. It's possible (though dreadful to contemplate) that by June we might be wishing that Tyler Pill and Tommy Milone were still around.
  21. With a 14 to 3 victory, the 1964 cover advances to the second round, while 2016 will retire to the loser's lounge to enjoy the all-you-can-eat shrimp buffet. ADVANCING TO ROUND TWO: ELIMINATED:
  22. I also went with 1990. I like the way that Frank Viola seems to be breaking the plane.

  24. CBS Sports wrote: X-rays on Plawecki's hand came back negative Wednesday, Matt Ehalt of The Bergen Record reports. Plawecki was hit by a pitch on his hand during the eighth inning Wednesday. While he was initially able to stay in the contest, Plawecki was pinch hit for later in the inning when his turn came up again. Fortunately, initial tests indicate the backstop avoided any breaks in his hand. This is certainly a relief for the Mets, who lost starting catcher Travis d'Arnaud earlier in the day to a partially torn UCL. Consider Plawecki day-to-day for now; with an off day Thursday, he may not be forced to miss any action.
