  1. Selfishly, this is convenient for me because I was going to have to miss all three games of this series. Now, at most, I'll miss two. This isn't at all surprising, really. COVID-19 is more prevalent now than it was back in October and most players probably haven't been vaccinated yet, since fewer of them would be in a high-priority group. The Mets are next scheduled to go to Washington the weekend beginning June 18. Would they play six seven-inning games (if this whole series is wiped out) or are they still planning on having teams play home games while they're on the road? If that's the case, the Nationals will be at Citi Field April 23, 24, and 25.
  2. What new rivalries? Does this have anything to do with Florence of the Frontier League?
  3. Fun fact: The first Met to reach 2 home runs last year never got a third one. It was Yoenis Cespedes.
  4. This wasn't important enough to make the back page of Newsday. They went with a Yankees Opening Day theme instead. They seem to be getting complacent after two consecutive wins in the Tabloid Cover Derby. http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2021/20210401_NYP_02.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/covers/2021/20210401_NYDN_02b.jpg>
  5. One Nationals player has tested positive for COVID-19, but their GM won't say which one. The Daily News wrote: On the eve of Opening Day, one player tested positive for the coronavirus with four others and one staff member needing to quarantine for being close contacts to that player, Nats GM Mike Rizzo announced.

  7. Let's not forget Whitey Herzog's disdain for Keith Hernandez.
  8. It would be more fun to think about this kind of stuff if we knew he was going to be sticking around. I just hope he doesn't start hearing good things about the Denver public school system.
  9. Pretty unusual, I think. I assumed it was a day game way back when and took a day off from work. Now I'm just going to have a day of leisure with no game to watch. (I probably won't get a chance to see any, or much, of the first three games. Schaefer voting may be delayed until the early part of next week, by the way.)

  11. Fortunately, it has had a non-corporate name, so it can always be known as Marlins Park.

BFBS? I don't think I've ever seen them referred to that way before, and I can't guess what it means? I assume one or both of the B's stands for "black".
  13. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/07/20/the-invention-of-the-policeThe Invention of the Police Jill Lepore in the New Yorker, July 20, 2020 wrote: American police differed from their English counterparts: in the U.S., police commissioners, as political appointees, fell under local control, with limited supervision; and law enforcement was decentralized, resulting in a jurisdictional thicket. In 1857, in the Great Police Riot, the New York Municipal Police, run by the mayor's office, fought on the steps of city hall with the New York Metropolitan Police, run by the state. The Metropolitans were known as the New York Mets. That year, an amateur baseball team of the same name was founded.
  14. A twelve-year contract would take him through his age-38 year. (He'll turn 39 the November after the 2032 season ends.) I guess $32 million might not seem like a lot of money (relatively speaking, of course) by 2032, but that still sounds like it would be a lot of money for a 38-year-old shortstop. I'm not sure what they should do here. I just hope they don't go into the free agent shortstop market next year and end up treating all of these free-agent shortstops like the did J.T. Realmuto and end up with whoever the shortstop version of James McCann is.
  15. Some of the Smurfs were pretty sexy, though.
  16. The only thing I remember about Avatar was thinking that it would have been much better if they had trimmed it by about an hour.

  19. It's simple. Be Gary Carter in 1985, not George Foster in 1982. (Or Carlos Beltran in 2005.)
  20. I hope this happens. Not sure yet what the likelihood is; we'll have to see how the story develops. An early litmus test will be the Masters Tournament, which is coming up much sooner than the All-Star Game. https://www.wsbradio.com/news/developing-calls-growing-major-events-pull-out-georgia-response-voting-law/ZPDWFXHMLJFJBFRNSNDUGVCFGQ/DEVELOPING: Calls growing for major events to pull out of Georgia in response to voting law

  24. I really hope they find some traction on Conforto.
  25. I think the "win" should be assigned by the official scorer. That would not only help starters, but would remove the unfairness of the "vulture win" that goes to a reliever who blows a save but is still in the game when the go-ahead run scores.
