  1. I'd even be fine with an 11-9, with a 1-2 against the Dodgers. Everything else as Centerfield put it.

  5. Frayed Knot wrote: They also have the potential to make starting this countdown in early August look like a really bad idea. I agree. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The Mets have a 7-game lead with 51 games to play. In 2007, they had the same size lead, but with only one third as many games remaining. Just sayin'.

  7. No Mets manager has ever won this award. Not even Gil Hodges, who certainly would have in 1969 if not for the fact that the award wasn't established until 1983.

  9. https://designshop-6aa0.kxcdn.com/photos/Utah-Style-Postcard-online-16570_6.jpg> Utah, the 45th state to enter the Union. The Mets have a 7-game lead with 51 games to play. In 2007, they had the same size lead, but with only one third as many games remaining. Just sayin'.
  10. Was that his evil twin who was pitching in 2019?
  11. I went with states because I thought we had done that once before, but couldn't prove it! But yeah, let's do all of the categories that Edgy suggested. I'm especially eager to see how the Heinz thing plays out. Why leave anything on the table? If history is a guide, it may be another eight or ten years before we get to do this again.
  12. I only see two names above his.
  13. Okay, I guess we're doing this, a little "sooner" than expected. Appropriately, the 46th state to enter the Union was Oklahoma: https://designshop-6aa0.kxcdn.com/photos/usa-oklahoma-large-letter-postcard-online-16562_31.jpg> (New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii are going to miss out on the fun, as will a few other states along the way, undoubtedly.)
  14. He's now at 10.2. He'll have a chance to move into the next tier in his next start.
  15. Unfortunately, the forum archives don't go back to 1986, so I don't know when we began that countdown. Nor for 1988. (On this date in 1986, the morning of April 9, the Mets had a 16-game lead over the Expos, and the Magic Number was 41. The Mets had played 107 games.) NEW YORK METS 72 35 .673 -- L-1 6-4 Montreal Expos 55 50 .524 16.0 W-5 6-4 Philadelphia Phillies 52 55 .486 20.0 L-5 4-6 St. Louis Cardinals 52 55 .486 20.0 W-5 7-3 Chicago Cubs 47 61 .435 25.5 W-1 4-6 Pittsburgh Pirates 43 63 .406 28.5 L-5 3-7
  16. I just looked it up: MLB.com wrote: Under current rules, Major League teams are allowed to carry 26 players on their everyday active rosters. Clubs can add a 27th player on days in which they play a doubleheader. In September, those roster limits expand to 28 (29 on twin bill days). Teams must use every one of those 28 spots and can also carry a five-player taxi squad with them on road trips. So only two new roster spots. One will probably be a pitcher, and the other may very well be Vientos. (Or it could be Baty. Or Alvarez. Or maybe neither! Maybe Nick Plummer or Khalil Lee or Joheshwy Fargas.)
  17. I voted Baty in April and I guess that's still my choice. I think he'll be in the organization longer than Vientos will, but I suppose it's possible that Vientos will get a September call-up, if that's still a thing. (The roster expands a little bit now, right? More players allowed than in August but much less than the previous 40, if I recall.)

  19. Could the Q be in the first name? The Mets may have had an Enrique at some point?
  20. Winning 100 games would be 30 and 23 the rest of the way.
  21. As I noted elsewhere the other day, the Mets will be helped a little once they win two more games against the Braves. They're currently 8-4 in the season series, and if they win two of the remaining seven games, the Mets would win the tie-breaker for the division title, shoud it come to that.
  22. I was wondering when it's considered appropriate to start a Magic Number countdown. I seem to remember in 2006 we counted down by displaying pictures of postcards from each state. (When the magic number was 15, we would show Kentucky.) But I couldn't find that thread in the archives. This is the one that I found: http://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/archives/4300/f1_t4310.shtmlhttp://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/archives/4300/f1_t4310.shtml I can't tell when it started and it definitely doesn't include states. In 2007, Steve Rogers started the countdown on August 15, when the number was 40, and he got heat for perhaps creating a jinx. http://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/archives/7100/f1_t7137.shtmlhttp://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/archives/7100/f1_t7137.shtml Luckily, the 2007 season ended with the Mets winning the division. (At least, I think that's how I remember it.) In 2008, batmagadanleadoff started the Magic Number thread on August 20, when the number was 35. That too, turned out well. http://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/archives/9900/f1_t9948.shtmlhttp://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/archives/9900/f1_t9948.shtml In 2015, it was Steve Rogers again, on September 7, when the number was 21: http://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/archives/23300/f1_t23310.shtmlhttp://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/archives/23300/f1_t23310.shtml Is there a consensus on what's appropriate? I don't believe at all in jinxes, but I do believe in the notion of having egg on your face. I suppose the other question is, who's going to be the one to take the plunge this year? Confession: I recently started doing it in a very subtle way. A free figurative box of Rice-A-Roni to anyone who figures it out.
  23. Definitely the bye.
  24. And also below Gregory Guerrero, Desmond Lindsay, and Wuilmer Becerra. I'm glad we kept Pete instead of those guys. (Guerrero, however, is still in the Mets organization. He's played this year in the Florida Coast League, St. Lucie, and Brooklyn. Currently 23 years old. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=guerre000grehttps://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=guerre000gre )
