I suspect that by September 22 the Phillies will have fallen off this list. At least I hope so!

In Sunday's action, we had three Happy Outcomes and four Unhappy Outcomes, although one of the four Unhappies actual counts as a Happy, since it involved the Cardinals beating the Braves. Happy Outcomes: Padres, Phillies, Braves lose. Unhappy Outcomes: Mets lose, Brewers, Dodgers, Cardinals win. The Braves just lost to the Cardinals, so the Magic Number is down to 31, as in California, the 31st state. Entered the Union on September 9, 1850. https://designshop-6aa0.kxcdn.com/photos/send-california-retro-style-greeting-card-online-16356_5.jpg>

His daughter posted a few weeks ago that he'd be appearing at Old Timers Day, and I thought, why??? A guy who only pitched three games for the Mets? But it was clearly a great decision. A great thing for the fans, and a great thing for his children and grandchildren.

The New York Post wrote: If it's up to Steve Cohen and his deep pockets, Jacob deGrom will remain in Queens. The Mets' owner seemed prepared to do whatever it takes to keep the ace right-hander a Met after he opts out of the final two years of his contract that would pay him an average of $31 million, as deGrom has said on multiple occasions he plans to do. “Listen, he certainly has the right to do that. We love Jacob, and I think he's the best pitcher in baseball,” Cohen told The Post on Saturday before the Mets hosted the Rockies at Citi Field. “We'll do whatever we can to make sure he stays. But it's his decision, not ours.”

Reintroducing the NHOP! It's like the IHOP, but with fewer varieties of pancake syrup. It stands for Necessary Happy Outcome Percentage. For the Mets to finish ahead of the Braves, things have to go the Mets' way in 47.1 percent of the games that the two teams have remaining on the schedule. This doesn't include the fact that winning one of the remaining head-to-head games would clinch the season series and reduce the magic number by two. That won't be factored in until and unless it actually happens. The Mets have already won the season series against the Phillies and Cardinals, so those magic numbers have been accordingly reduced by one. The Padres have won the season series against the Mets, with Dodgers and Brewers still to be determined. These numbers tell us that while the division and the first-round bye (the Mets would have to meet their NHOP against both the Braves and the Cardinals for the bye) are very much up for grabs, it remains extremely likely that the Mets will at least make the Wild Card series, and probably with the home-field advantage. The Magic Number spent about ten minutes in Oregon before settling in for the night in Minnesota, where Jerry Koosman presumably is, since he wasn't at Citi Field today. Minnesota entered the Union as the 32nd state on May 11, 1858. https://designshop-6aa0.kxcdn.com/photos/usa-minnesota-vintage-postcard-16548_86.jpg>

I think he was at Shea Good-bye.

A few players whose absences I noticed, in addition to David Wright. I don't know which players were invited and declined (for whatever reason) and which weren't. I'm sure one of them was likely unwelcome. Koosman, Grote, Boswell, Dyer, Garrett, Ryan, Gentry, Ron Hodges, Swan, Zachry, Kingman, Foster, Dykstra, Davey Johnson, Viola, Bonilla, Beltran, Delgado, Glavine, Santana, Dickey.

They're wearing adjustable caps. Gooden on the mound and Piazza behind the plate.

Bobby Valentine with the grease paint mustache... And geez... John Stearns.

Jane Jarvis playing the National Anthem!

He's having a terrific year. Just a recent slump.
