  1. I switched to the game in Atlanta after the Mets ended, just in time to see the Phillies cough up the lead. A Philadelphia loss would register as a Happy Outcome, but the Happier Outcome would be a Braves loss.
  2. I voted Walker. You mentioned Jon Niese, but Bartolo Colon also switched to the bullpen in 2015 for the postseason. As did Rick Aguilera in 1986.
  3. I remember being at a game in 1984 where he had an RBI double. The crowd loved it. It was nice that Lee Mazzilli was able to return to the Mets to enjoy a trip to the postseason, but it would have been even nicer if Stearns could have stuck around long enough to be Gary Carter's backup in 1985 and 1986.
  4. Here's a connection I hadn't made until today. In Game 1 of both the 1973 and 1986 World Series, the Mets lost because of an error by their second baseman. http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/covers/1973/19731014_NYDN_02.jpg> http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/covers/1986/19861019_NYDN_02.jpg>
  5. And that's everybody! George Stone is the only player to have started one and only one postseason game for the Mets, although I much fear that Max Scherzer (and perhaps Bassitt or Carrasco) may be also end up in this category. Stone also joins Cone as the only pair whose names rhyme, unless you want to try "Reeder" and Ojeda. 7 starts (2) 1. Tom Seaver 2. Al Leiter 6 starts (3) 1. Jerry Koosman 2. Dwight Gooden 3. 10. I didn't notice that Jeff McNeil was singing as he hit that double. That seems a bit our of character.
  11. Naming all 24 pitchers who have stared postseason games for the Mets. 7 starts (2) 1. Tom Seaver 2. Al Leiter 6 starts (3) 1. Jerry Koosman 2. Dwight Gooden 3. 12. Twenty-four different pitchers have started postseason games for the Mets. Let's try to name them all. Usual guessing rules apply. Since some of these are going to be very easy, I'll start us out Wheel-of-Fortune style with the five pitchers who have started the most games. 7 starts (2) 1. Tom Seaver 2. Al Leiter 6 starts (3) 1. Jerry Koosman 2. Dwight Gooden 3. Ron Darling 5 starts (1) 1. 4 starts (6) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 3 starts (5) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 2 starts (6) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 1 start (1) 1.
  13. Well... if that's uniform number 20, the runner is Mick Kelleher. (Number 10 for the Cubs in 1977 was a player who only appeared in a few games, none against the Mets.) Kelleher appeared in five games at Shea in 1977, but in one of them Ron Hodges caught for the Mets, so that leaves these four: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN197709181.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN197709181.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN197709172.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN197709172.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN197709171.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN197709171.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN197707130.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN197707130.shtml

  15. I remember the time he tagged out Dave Parker at the plate, in a collision that rattled the entire stadium. And also this: https://www.tcdb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/81/81-205Fr.jpg> https://www.tcdb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/81/81-205Bk.jpg>
  16. 2022 marks the 12th time that the Mets have won 90 or more games in a season. Most team wins in a season 1. 108 (1986) 2. 100 (1969, 1988) 4. 98 (1985) 5. 97 (1999, 2006) 7. 94 (2000) 8. 92 (1987) 9. 91 (1990) 10. 90 (1984, 2015, 2022)

  18. Yesterday was a perfect day, NHOP-wise. (That's a word you don't see every day.) Four Happy Outcomes: A win by the Mets and losses by the Phillies, Padres, and Cardinals. Braves, Dodgers, and Brewers were idle. The Mets only have to go 6 and 11 (a .353 pace) to clinch a playoff spot. They should probably, however, aspire to do a bit better than that. 19. Louisiana became the 18th state on April 30, 1812. Where were YOU on that day??? It's called "The Pelican State" because people there liked to say, "Who's yer pelican?" https://designshop-6aa0.kxcdn.com/photos/send-greeting-card-louisiana-vintage-16543_70.jpg>
  20. And he didn't even look to see if anyone was hurt by the flying bat, at least as far as I could tell. He just turned his back.
  21. Dominic Smith is .271/.361/.436 at Syracuse with 7 homes in 45 games. Are we sure he's not a better option than Ruf and Vogelbach?
  22. I thought Baty was expected to be done for the season?

  24. As bad as yesterday was, we ended up with more Happy Outcomes (4) than Unhappy Outcomes (3). Happy: Losses by the Braves, Padres, Brewers, and Dodgers. Unhappy: Loss by the Mets, wins by the Phillies and Cardinals. The Mets really need to get on track if they want that first-round bye, but the consolation prize of the Wild Card round is still looking very likely. For now, anyway. 25. The 19th State was Indiana! I'm not sure anyone knows what a "Hoosier" is. My favorite explanation, which is most likely wrong, is that it's because people in Indiana like to ask, "Who's yer uncle?" Indiana became a state on December 11, 1816. https://designshop-6aa0.kxcdn.com/photos/usa-indiana-send-vintage-greeting-card-online-16538_40.jpg>
