  1. Edgy MD wrote: Thanks for all your great work. Could Bench Player of the Year regain some of its past relevance by including designated hitters? I'm spitballing, clearly. I thought about making it be for players who start fewer than half the games, but they would accumulate points even in the games that they did start. But I'm not going to actually make any changes. Schaefer survives because of the minimal effort required since I've automated it. I'm not inclined to invest any time in modifying the code that's in place. The Bench Award serves, I guess, to inspire baseball cards for guys who ordinarily wouldn't have gotten one, like Ruf and Gore and Lee etc.
  2. There is none. Nobody really cares about this!

  6. Not that it's directly comparable, but I was curious so I looked it up. Pedro Martinez was going into his age 33 year when he signed a four-year deal with the Mets. I would guess that some team may go four years, $160 million for deGrom, but that's far from certain. It's a big risk, and most teams are going to be conscious of the luxury tax. Putting 40 million eggs in one basket may be too much.

  10. Here is a list of 2022 Mets. Some are pending free agents, others are not. Anyone, potentially, can be traded, although it's extremely unlikely in a few cases. However, let's see how good we are at forecasting. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to paste the list of players into a reply and, after each name, put a YES or a NO. YES if you think the player will be in the Mets organization on Opening Day 2023, NO if you think they won't. I may or may not tally these votes to see who wins. No promises! 11. If deGrom opts out, he'll be passing on $30.5 million in 2023 and $32.5 million in 2024. $100 million over three years would mean slight (by his standards, not mine!) raises in the next two years and one additional year guaranteed at about the same rate. I suspect he's looking for a lot more than that. He'll probably look for something around $40 million per year. And that's too much, but he just needs the "one dumb owner". I don't think he'll be back.
  12. Edgy MD wrote: That's a lot of sarcastic misrepresentation and utter nonsense directed at your fellow posters. Well said. It was a ridiculous statement.
  13. I'm thinking the same. DeGrom's best days are behind him, and his biggest contract is ahead of him. That was also true of Max Scherzer and of Pedro Martinez and many other free agent signings. You kind of have to accept that that's the way it is, but for deGrom the balance between money and remaining productivity is probably very unfavorable.
  14. It's just a game. They had a great season, but fell short. It happens. Every year it happens to multiple teams. This year it happened to the Mets. We can either choose to wallow in angst or to get on with our lives. I know that there are those who prefer the first option, but I'll never understand why.

  17. Top of the order in the fourth. They can certainly get something going. It's way too early to give up.
  18. So the saxophone thing is new? I had never noticed it before, but thought that maybe it's more apparent in the ballpark than on TV. I thought it was effective... they played it every time a pitcher threw Ball Three, and it really emphasized how frequently the Padres were throwing Ball Three. Maybe it made them notice it as well. The atmosphere was festive throughout. It was the most fun I've had at a baseball game since October 25, 1986. Every fan was handed an orange THESE METS towel, which will make a nice souvenir from a memorable night. On the scoreboard they played videos of Al Leiter and Curtis Granderson reminiscing about their personal Mets postseason memories. I don't think anyone in the park was happy to see Darin Ruf in the starting lineup. Luckily, we won anyway. Our seats were in the Prominade, Section 505. The right field corner was obstructed, but in this game, not a whole lot happened there. https://www.leaptoad.com/mets/cards/2022WildCardGame2.jpg>
  19. Oh, please. It's fun. We have a playoff game to watch tonight. And this is the "most sickening and disheartening" scenario imaginable? This is much better than the last few weeks of 2007. Were you not around for that?
  20. METS IN THE WILD CARD SERIES All-Time Leaders These numbers have become modestly better: We now have a run and an RBI and a triple and a homer and some stolen bases and a hit-by-pitch! 21. We waited six years for this.
  22. I remember when Ed Kranepool's 118 was the club record. (Until Dave Kingman passed him.) Now Kranepool is all the way down to 13th place.
  23. These comparisons have become a standard way to preview a postseason series, but it's a facile and pointless way to compare two teams. How often does a series come down to who has the best left fielder? But here it is anyway. It at least gives us a chance to learn a little about the Padres. https://www.mlb.com/news/mets-padres-position-by-position-2022-wild-card-series-breakdownPadres-Mets Position-by-Position Breakdown (Mets determined to be better in eight of eleven areas! We can't lose!)
  24. Uh oh... Looks like you may have missed two games, August 8 and October 5. The good news is that you can still get to 161. The bad news is... no Rice-A-Roni!
