  1. Frayed Knot wrote: So how would that work ... If your system still carries TBS would they start blacking out all the games? I remember back when I was first able to watch TBS it was a local Atlanta station. We'd see ads for car dealerships and the Georgia lottery and stuff like that. There might have even been local Atlanta newscasts, where we'd be able to see burning apartment buildings in Georgia as opposed to our local news, where we'd see burning apartment buildings in Queens or New Jersey. For the longest time, though, TBS has been a national station with no local Atlanta flavor. I wonder if there's still a local WTBS on Channel 17 in Atlanta and a different TBS that's a national cable station. (I remember that it was Channel 17 because of the "nickname" of CHANNEL that Andy Messersmith, I think, wore on his back above his uniform number 17 as a promotional stunt dreamed up by Ted Turner.)
  2. Yuck. You may have a bit of explaining to do next time you get your prostate examined.
  3. From a Google news search. I couldn't read the whole article, but here's what showed up in the search results: ]The Ledger Domain MLB's 7-Year-Hitch to Fox and The All-Star Game Subscription - Baseball Prospectus - Jul 17, 2006 Due to The shift with Turner, starting in 2008, TBS will no longer carry Braves games nationally, but instead will show 45 games locally on WTBS. ...
  4. Did I read somewhere that TBS won't be carrying the Braves after this year? (Or maybe next year?) I'm hoping that I'll be able to get the SNY telecast over Extra Innings. (I haven't watched a game with Gary, Ron and Keith yet this season.) It would be much better than watching those bozoes on TBS. (Oh, and since I won't be around this evening, can someone else please step in and kick off the Schaefer thread? Thanks.)
  5. True. Six innings and two runs would make me plenty happy.
  6. I remember the Daily News lead that day said something like, "The first place Mets. Roll that around on your tongue for a while..." And the article had a quote from Ron Hodges, though I don't remember what he said. It's funny that I remember that after all these years. Seeing the Mets in first place after 15 games must have made quite an impression on my 14-year-old self. 7. Many hours until game time, but I figured I'd kick off the pre-game discussion. I won't be participating in the IGT tonight because I plan to watch the game tomorrow morning on TiVo delay. It'll be the 2007 premiere of Saturday Morning Baseball, a wonderful new tradition that I initiated last season. Anyway, if the Mets can somehow sweep the Braves like the did the Cardinals, it'll be a heckuva statement. And it may result in the Mets going "wire-to-wire." A loss tonight, however, and the Mets will be in second place. The thing I'm most looking forward to is seeing Oliver Perez pitch for the first time this year. I'm hoping he doesn't turn in one of his 5 innings, 6 runs, 8 strikeouts performances. If he can give us 7 strong innings or so, it will really be a good sign for this season. If he reverts to the Perez we saw through most of 2006 I can see us spending the next few months longing for Pedro Martinez. Or Philip Humber. Or, gasp, Dave Williams.
  8. I think the Braves have proved that the Phillies are the team to beat. They've already done it three times.
  9. metirish wrote: mabe even a #1 but I think he would be the Mets third or fourth starter,Maine will win as many if not ,ore games than Dice.If the Mets had signed Matsuzaka, there's no way he'd start after John Maine. Maine might end up with more wins, but Matsuzaka would have probably been the Game 2 starter, after Glavine. The only thing that distinguishes a 1 from a 2 from a 3 is which games they start during the first week of the season.
  10. Yeah, really. I mean, it's not like when... I'm sorry. I can't complete the joke. I can't think of another celebrity breakup that might have made me weep. Sorry.
  11. I think Willie's in-game decision making was better in 2006 than in 2005. There's probably a learning curve for managers and he seems to be showing progress. His real strength, though, is in the off-the-field stuff. I think he handles the team well in the clubhouse. This is just a guess, of course, since I've never been in there. But I was watching him during the televised division-clinching celebration, and I saw him going around and saying a brief something to each player. He's quiet, he's cool, and he sets a good tone. You still need to make good calls from the dugout, but the clubhouse stuff has value too.
  12. ="OlerudOwned"]Nice! I rarely fail to point out Looper's middle name. I like the way you did it this time around.
  13. I think Johnny must have turned into the Hulk.
  14. Wow, it's nice how responsive that Assistant GM is.
  15. My Imaginary Dinner with Ira: Me: I think I'll order the pot roast. Ira: We've been to this restaurant four times, and each time you ordered chicken? Explain to me why you're ordering pot roast today. Me: I don't know. I'm just in the mood for pot roast today. Ira: There's something you're not telling me. Why are you hiding the real reason that you'r'e ordering pot roast? If you prefer pot roast to chicken, why did you order chicken last week and the week before that? Me: I'm not hiding anything. Last week I felt like eating chicken. Today I want pot roast. Ira: You're not being forthcoming. I can only assume that you have some evil motive for ordering pot roast that you're reluctant to share. Either that or you don't have enough brains to discern the differences between chicken and pot roast.
  16. If true it would certainly bode well for the Mets. But I think every team needs to get through their rotations a few times before we even begin to speculate.
  17. Is Jeremy related to Vinegar Bend?
  18. The Mets have four of their farm clubs opening their seasons tomorrow: New Orleans, Binghamton, Savannah, and St. Lucie. The remaining three teams: Gulf Coast, Kingsport, and Brooklyn open their seasons on June 19. Great idea for a thread. (And 3 Schaefer points to you for not calling it "All-Purpose Savannah Sand Gnats thread") We need to sign up some correspondents in Binghamton, New Orleans, and all the other Mets affiliate cities. (Brooklyn would probably be the easiest position to fill.)
  19. Was Ryan Franklin pitching with a noose around his neck? I haven't been participating here, but I have been watching. Among other things, I learned that there's a chain grocery store in Missouri called "Schunks" and they have Oscar Mayer bacon on sale this week. (Bacon: the Oscar Mayer product that doesn't have a catchy commercial jingle.) I'm going to bed now. Somebody please feel free to kick off the Schaefer thread once the game ends. And remember voters, it's OHernandez! Thank you! Good night! Drive home safely!
  20. Then it couldn't have been "scrappy."
  21. Well, it may be in a good location for out-of-town visitors, but it's not in a good location for the city and its residents. Cooby, you were able to get in and out of the stadium without experiencing the city of Philadelphia at all. Good for you, bad for Philadelphia.
  22. Did they boo him?
  23. And while I'm at it I also think the Rockies' ballpark should look like a pagoda. So there!
  24. I'd never seen (or heard of) Dinger before. He looks too much like he's from the cast of Barney for my liking. I think he's Baby Bop's cousin. Iccch. The team should have been named the Bears. They could at least have a bear as the mascot.
  25. Edgy DC wrote: No, because he used a starting pitcher that wasn't getting into the game anyhow. Sometimes he'd use Ron Darling, but there were many times when he used Lenny Dykstra. Does every team have a guy who only pinch hits? I'd think that most of them can probably stay in a game in the event of a double switch. Franco can do that, he's played first and third. He's certainly more useful than Staub in that regard.
