I'm more concerned over consecutive ineffective outings by Maine than I am by a failure to finish off a sweep of the Yankees. But I'm not overly concerned about Maine yet either. He's entitled to a down spell, and I'd rather he have it now than in September or October.
  5. It was a nine minute speech. If he had droned on for an hour and a half, then yes, it would probably have been a human rights violation or something like that. But at nine minutes, it couldn't have been that unendurable. Anyone who makes it through four years of college has learned to sit through much longer periods of boredom.
  6. Hi Clueless! Say hello to your brother for me. You know, Lying Koolaid Guzzler!
  7. "A poor man's Trachsel?" Yikes. I remember when we had "a poor man's Greg Maddux." We're really slipping, aren't we? What's next? A poor man's Geremi Gonzalez?
  8. Wasn't Lenny DiNardo a supporting character on Laverne and Shirley?
  9. AND they don't even have to catch the Red Sox to make the playoffs, you know. Last time I looked they were only about five games out in the wild card race.
  10. Wright 2 Easley 1 Heilman 1
  11. I do remember a mock vote from you, but I think (thought) it was the only time you voted. But I don't pay that close attention to who's voting and who isn't. That aside, I have a system that makes the tallying very quick and simple, and I don't feel motivated to make it more complicated.
  12. I don't recall that you ever participated in these, but maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, I think that eliminating the outliers would have little effect on the totals, but would simply require more effort on my part. Anyone who wants to experiment can compare the actual results for a game or two with the results we'd have gotten with outlying votes eliminated. I'm curious to see what the impact would be, but not curious enough to try it myself.
  13. Voting for the exciting comeback victory over the Cubs will close on Tuesday morning: http://cybermessageboard.ehost.com/getalife/viewtopic.php?t=6377
  14. Yeah, you can't blame the ghostwriter. If your name is on the cover as the author, you're responsible for whatever is between the pages.

  17. I'd also call the one-game playoff in 1999 the "Al Leiter Game" To me, the "Edgardo Alfonzo Game" would be this one: http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/gamedetail.php?gameno=6067
  18. Reyes and Lo Duca each scored one run, so I think they should get roughly equal points. And I agree with Frayed Knot. I think Wagner certainly deserves at least a full point, if not more.

  22. For posterity: ="Newsday"] Report: Giambi regrets doing "that stuff" May 18, 2007, 8:08 AM EDT The Yankees' Jason Giambi discussed taking steroids and thinks that Major League Baseball should apologize for drug use by its players according to a report in Friday's USA Today. In the report, Giambi says he "was wrong to do that stuff" and that the players should have taken a stand years ago. "We made a mistake," Giambi says in the article. In February 2005, while making his first public comments since it was revealed that he told a federal grand jury he had used performance-enhancing steroids for at least three seasons, the Yankees first baseman/designated hitter opened his news conference by apologizing to fans, teammates and the organization. "I feel I let down the fans. I feel I let down the media. I feel I let down the Yankees, not only the Yankees, but my teammates ... Most of all, to the fans, I'm sorry." When pressed to explain what he was sorry for at the time, Giambi -- citing "ongoing legal matters" -- repeatedly said he had been advised not to go into further detail. At no time did he use the word "steroids." Giambi, who signed a seven-year, $120-million deal in December 2001, watched as the Yankees tried to void his contract after a report in the San Francisco Chronicle contained revelations about his testimony. According to today's USA Today, Giambi, who has five homers and is batting .273 this season, said, "that stuff didn't help me hit home runs." Giambi used the same argument to defend his friend, San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, who is marching towards MLB's all-time home run mark. "If it were that easy, how come you don't see anyone else doing what he has done?" Giambi said. Giambi refused to comment on why he took steroids. "Maybe one day I'll talk about it, but not now."
