  1. If we're looking for good news, Ruben Gotay has looked pretty good at second base today.
  2. Nope, not Fingers. Hint: All four pitched for the Atlanta Braves during their careers. One of the four was also a Met.
  3. End of the 8th, Mets are down by four with the lower half of the order due up in the 9th.
  4. Johnny Dickshot wrote: Just guessing... Tekulve ... Lee Smith ... Al Holland ... Jeff Reardon Nope, none of those guys. Irish, yes, Sutter was the second name Keith mentioned.
  5. During today's telecast, a viewer e-mail asked Keith Hernandez who was the toughest closer he ever faced. He didn't give a definitive answer, but while thinking out loud listed four names. Anybody (who wasn't listening) care to guess who the four were?
  6. If you're referring to the one that bounced off his knee, no, I can't fault him for not getting that. It was a real hard shot. I don't know about any others. I may have missed something while I was on the phone.
  7. Mets trying to get something started in the 7th as Easley and Castro get on with nobody out.
  8. What happened? I was on the phone for a few minutes, and now it's 8 to 2. That sweep I wanted is looking less likely. I'll feel better if both the Phillies and Braves lose today. (Phils are up on Washington 3-2 in the 4th.)
  9. Yeah, Lastings is looking like a keeper. I'll be really pissed if he's traded for Mark Loretta or something stupid like that.
  10. Lasty gets us one back with a solo homer. Now it's 5-2. No big dance this time.
  11. Perez didn't leap over the foul line when the 6th inning ended. I remember one game last year he did that little jump after a brutal inning, and it bugged me. I'm glad he didn't do it this time. I wonder if Rick Peterson left cooties on Oliver's shoulder? The game really changed for the worse after his visit. Top of the order for the Mets in the sixth. Maybe they can get a few back.
  12. This game is unraveling. Josh Phelps hits a two-run homer. Pirates 5, Mets 1.
  13. He's grimacing, but nodding. Looks like he'll stay in the game.
  14. Uh-oh. Trainer is visiting Wright. That ball hid hard off Wright's right knee.
  15. Ugh. Nady drives a single off of David Wright's leg, and two runs score. 3-1 Pirates.
  16. Rick Peterson (not wearing a jacket) visits Perez on the mound before pitching to Nady. I remember the Oakland announcers talking about how Peterson puts his right hand on the pitcher's left shoulder when they talk. They said that some of the A's pitchers hated that. I had never noticed it before, but now I always do.
  17. Another foul pop, this one a terrific running catch by Gotay who then turns and throws a bullet to the plate to keep the runner on third.
  18. Big out as Sanchez foul pops to Delgado.
  19. And a bunt and a wild throw by Perez brings the tying run home. Second and third, nobody out.
  20. Well, Ralph's visit to the booth is done. He's off to Cooperstown. I just learned that August 9 is "Mets Shoelace Day" and the gang from Sesame Street will be at Shea to celebrate. They really must be running out of ideas.
  21. With one out in the fifth, Perez has seven strikeouts.
  22. Stupid "Your Season Has Come" commercial on SNY shows a kid watching with his dad as the Mets win the 1986 World Series, and then that same kid, now grown up, watching the 2007 Mets with his son. But in the flashback scene, the kid is wearing an all-black Mets cap as he watches Jesse Orosco strike out Marty Barrett. Ugh. It's bad enough that they wear them now. Don't mar 1986 with black caps!
  23. He's flogging some MasterCard promotion. Now Ralph Kiner is in the booth!
  24. Gary Carter in the booth! Hernandez and Carter together again! It's like a reunion of Lennon and McCartney!
  25. John Travolta is at the game, wearing one of those weird Mets pre-game practice caps. Robin Williams is also in Travolta's box.
