  2. That's what I meant. It sounded like Omar was saying that they might go outside the organization if Castro has to go on the DL, rather than promote Alomar.
  3. So you're saying that, even though the 2006 Mets had a higher total attendance over 81 home dates, the 1986 team had a higher average attendance per game?
  4. I'm surprised at how reluctant they seem to be to go with Alomar.
  5. I don't agree. I think, as far as Hall-of-Fame inductions go, the fewer the better. It ought to be very exclusive. I'd like to remove about ten percent of the players in there.
  6. Minnesota, Cleveland, etc. must be the "so damned ingrained" markets.
  7. Economics and greed have been part of the game forever. When we're eight years old it's easy to be unaware of it. As we get older, if we're still paying attention, it becomes more and more obvious. But just because we each make this discovery on our own, doesn't mean it's anything new. Greed isn't going to kill baseball. It would be nice if the game was completely unspoiled by the realities of the business world, but that never will happen and it never was the case. That's why I don't like that HBO title "When it Was a Game." It's still a game, no more or less than it ever was.
  8. Voting for Thursday's 7-6 loss to Atlanta will close on Tuesday: http://cranepoolforum.qwknetllc.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7076 Voting for the entire Florida series will close on Wednesday.
  9. Since three people (or two people and one b.o.t.) got their votes in late, I decided to, this one time only, re-tally this game. 11. Who do we root for when Atlanta plays Philadelphia? My feeling was that I didn't want either team to sweep. Not sure which way to root in the rubber game, though. It's nice that we can be sure at least one of the teams will lose. Too bad we also know one of them will win.
  12. I know. I kept his because it had a vote in it.
  13. DiFelice? Not Alomar?
  14. August 11: Danny Napoleon wins big, thanks to a link from FoxSports.com: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7111044
  15. Suddenly I'm very glad that I'm going to go more than two weeks without being able to watch Mets baseball. I don't expect they'll still be in first place when I come home from California on Labor Day. If they are, it will be a wonderful surprise.

  19. It's not the Hall of Great Statistics, it's the Hall of Fame. Those who bring infamy (the opposite of fame) to the game don't belong. If Bonds, McGwire, Rose, and Sosa never end up in Cooperstown, it's all right with me. And I don't care what their numbers are. American Heritage Dictionary wrote: FAME NOUN: 1a. Great renown: a concert violinist of international fame. b. Public estimation; reputation: a politician of ill fame. INFAMY: NOUN: Inflected forms: pl. infamies 1. Evil fame or reputation. 2. The condition of being infamous. 3. An evil or criminal act that is publicly known.
  20. I don't know much of anything about the Ultimates, but I think it's strange and annoying that Marvel has two versions of all of their characters. Twice as much potential merchandise to sell, I guess.
  21. Would Maine be correct if I guessed it? If not, I'll try Hernandez.

(I hadn't noticed the tie earlier when I said that Sosa's game was third best.)
  24. Hernandez vs. the A's was tied for 10th best Schaefer score this year. (4.71 points.) Sosa vs. Detroit was third with 5.23 points. I can post the Schaefer Top Ten, but I don't want to spoil the quiz here. I'll just go this far: I'll throw the highest Schaefer score into the ring and see where it lands: Orlando Hernandez, April 3 vs. St. Louis, 1 ER in 7 innings. 5 hits, 2 walks, no strikeouts. 5.56 Schaefer points.
  25. Vargas' first start?
