  1. Frank Thomas on Branch Rickey: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1946&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60 He was "no good."
  2. Delgado had a horrendous April, and a poor June. But other than that he's been okay. Would you rather have Jason Phillips?
  3. According to Frank Thomas in Kiss it Good-bye, his dealings with Branch Rickey were consistent with Ralph Kiner's.
  4. I think I heard the ESPN announcers say on Sunday night that Willie hopes to get Beltran back on Wednesday. Has anyone heard anything to that effect from a more reliable source? Last year's postseason outfield: Beltran, Green, Chavez, Floyd (with very limited availability) and Michael Tucker. Should the Mets make the playoffs this year, they could probably do better than that: Beltran, Alou, Green, Milledge, Chavez. (Maybe Gomez instead of Chavez? And, unfortunately, it's possible that Alou will go into October in a condition as poor as Floyd's was last year.)
  5. Edgy DC wrote: Really, it's valadius that seems to look a little a off in that thread, calling Petit "as sure-fire a prospect as they come," and then turning around and watching the guy puke up a 9.57 ERA last season. He's done perfectly fine this year, but that was something of a jettisonning of perspective. Yeah, but he's young. (And he was even younger then.) Perspective is something that comes easier with age, at least for most of us.
  6. That Oprah Winfrey thing is still awfully weird.
  7. Hopefully they'll lose 20 of their next 23 then. After the way this season started, how badly would it suck if the Yankees were playing in October and the Mets weren't? Mets in, Yankees out is the best possible way for the regular season to end.
  8. Voting for the entire Cubs series will close on Wednesday. Friday: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7029 Saturday: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7032 Sunday: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7042 Sunday's game, Tom Glavine's 300th win, seems especially low on votes. If your name isn't Gwreck, TransMonk, metsguyinmichigan, Frayed Knot, G-Fafif, Yancy Street Gang, metirish, sharpie, or Vic Sage, then you haven't voted yet for this game.

  10. I think it's a Florida announcer who yells "Get out of here, ball!" when a Marlins player hits one deep. That one always makes me cringe.
  11. Really, 1 out of 3 would still be okay. It would only allow the Braves to gain one game on the Mets. I'd rather see the Mets gain a game than lose a game, of course, but the only way this series is disastrous for the Mets is if they lose all three.
  12. I'm not even going to bother reading it, and that excerpt that KC just posted shows me that I'm not missing anything. Fans haven't embraced him. Five years later, they still haven't forgiven him for pitching for the Atlanta Braves. I don't think we need to expect our players to be "born and bred a Met and bleeding orange and blue." It's stupid enough that some fans feel this way. In an ideal world, a sportswriter would know better.
  13. I have to admit that it is strange to see four points left on the table, and a big zero for Delgado, who drove in 4 runs out of 8. Anyway, tomorrow marks the closing of Thursday's series finale in Milwaukee. http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7017 The entire Chicago series will close on Wednesday.
  14. Let's remember to keep discussion out of the voting threads. This is from the August 5 thread: Frayed Knot wrote: ="metsguyinmichigan"]Glavine 3 Lastings 2 Castillo 1 Only a 6-point game? Perfectly legit if that's what you want, but in games like this one I have a tough time keeping the points down to the maximum allowable 10. Also, Michigan, please vote for "Milledge" not for "Lastings" How to vote

  19. Greg, thanks for scanning and sending the photo, but I had already scanned it myself. (Thanks for the page 43 tip.) Anyone who'd like to see the photo can find it here: http://leaptoad.com/mets/schaefer.php
  20. ="G-Fafif"]Page 43. Leroy Neiman and, I'm guessing, a brewery exec are in on it. You'd think he'd get beer, but he gets a Neiman. Found it, thanks! Maybe we can commission Randy Neimann to paint a picture of this year's winner.
  21. You must have a different edition than the one I do, Greg. Mine has no such picture, although it does have this gem: http://leaptoad.com/mets/jpeg/woody_flynn.jpg And there's also a Rolaids ad that says that in 1978 the Mets spelled relief S-K-I-P L-O-C-K-W-O-O-D.
  22. Really??? Wow! That's our first case of an actual documented winner that we've been able to unearth. Nice going! I'm going to scramble for my 1979 yearbook right now. I'll have to post that photo on this page.

  25. Yup, Coleman is the only Met to walk five times in a game. (08/10/92) Four opponents have done it: 09/16/72 Elrod Hendricks Cubs 09/07/73 Tim Foli Expos 04/22/83 Dale Murphy Braves 04/08/03 Ivan Rodriguez Marlins
