  1. Frayed Knot wrote: ="metsguyinmichigan"]Traditionally, we don't do well against kid pitchers making their debut. A statement made by fans of all 30 MLB teams. Gary Cohen said something to that effect (about the Mets struggling against rookies) during yesterday's broadcast. I'd like to see stats (over the last ten years, maybe) showing how starting pitchers typically do in their big league debut. It does seem like a lot of them do pretty well.
  2. I'll guess that the best call-up score was by Brian Lawrence last week.
  3. I read in the paper that Marlon Anderson is on bereavement leave. (I can't find it now; I think it was his grandmother or grandfather who died.) So he's gone for three days. Speculation was that the Mets would recall either Chip Ambres or Sandy Alomar for the duration. Any word on whether we expect to see Beltran this series? If they're thinking Ambres or Alomar, it sounds like Beltran won't see action against the Marlins.
  4. The 1988 NLCS taught me never to be too confident going into a postseason series. And in the seven series the Mets have played since then, I've never gone in assuming the Mets would win, although I was probably least concerned about the two NLCS's the Mets played against the Cardinals.
  5. Voting for Wednesday's win over the Braves will close some time over the weekend. http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7068 There are 13 votes in the thread, which is about normal for a Mets win these days, so it's possible that everyone has voted. Nevertheless, voting will remain open at least through the remainder of today. Another point of business: My last Schaefer tallying for a while will be on Friday, August 17. After that I'm going to disappear on vacation for a couple of weeks. I may vote for a few of the games if I happen to find an Internet terminal in my hotel lobby, but I won't be tallying. Keep voting, and I'll get caught up when I get back after Labor Day.

  8. If they follow the comics too closely the movies will only appeal to the comic book fans, and they won't make as much money. If they don't make the movie, then they won't make any money. The reason they make these movies isn't to make comic fans' dreams come true, it's to make money. I understand why Galactus couldn't be a giant man in a purple metal skirt and became a cloud instead. And I also understand why Iron Man's origins won't be set in Viet Nam during the war. Some departures are acceptable. The key thing is to be true to the characters and the spirit of the original. They changed the origin of the Fantastic Four, and I can accept that. They changed the personality of Doctor Doom, and that sucked. But you can't be a strict fundamentalist with these things. (Or, in my opinion, with anything, really.)
  9. I'll stick with my three: Agbayani, Dykstra, and Pratt. All were walkoff homers in post-season games at a pivotal point in their respective series.
  10. I don't think it's worth getting pissed off about. I would have preferred a white Kingpin, and a white Alicia, and a white Nick Fury, because I like to see these movies as true to the comics as possible. But the movies take so many liberties with their story telling that the race of a few characters ranks way down on the list. Anyway, if it makes you feel any better, I hear that Matt Damon is going to play Luke Cage.
  11. Willie Harris is as annoying as Willie McGee used to be.
  12. Single by Gotay, double by Reyes. Second and third, nobody out. Will this become something?
  13. That came after Green took a face full of sand diving in vain for a foul ball.
  14. Keith just did a terrible Bob Murphy impression.
  15. Yeah, getting him back has been more of a boost than I had been expecting.
  16. That sounds like high praise for Flores, especially when you consider that he's 16 years old. (Born in 1991!) He's an "infielder" and, if he's a real hotshot, he might be in the majors in four or five years. Wright and Reyes should still be around then, so I guess we should think about him as a second baseman?
  17. It looked like a three-run homer off Alou's bat, but on the replay it showed that, had it not been caught, it probably would have hit near the top of the left field wall. But that ball really jumped off the bat.
  18. Castro instead of Lo Duca and Anderson instead of Milledge, but otherwise they're pretty much putting the A-team out there on a day game after a night game.
  19. Ugh. Scoscia. I was at that stinking game. I must have blocked it out. Ugh. Aaron Boone. I wonder, though, if that would make the Yankees list. Boone, Dent, Chambliss would be a worthy three, but I'd bet that a list complied by ESPN would want to include Babe Ruth's "called shot."
  20. The three for the Yankees should include Chris Chambliss and Bucky Dent. The Red Sox have to have Carlton Fisk. (And maybe that grand slam by Johnny Damon in Game 7 against the Yankees in 2004?) It's hard for me to think of three homers for any one team (other than the Mets) There are some homers that obviously have to be included in their team's lists: Bill Mazeroski, Joe Carter, Kirk Gibson, Bobby Thomson...
  21. Todd Pratt Benny Agbayani Lenny Dykstra
  22. Thanks, Michigan.
