  2. I'll have to look at the calendar to be sure, but this may mean we won't need to get a start from Figgy.
  3. Are you referring to Thurston Howell, or Mister Magoo?
  4. Oh, I know Beltran had the superior year, and deserved the Schaefer award that year. I'm not disputing that. My point was that he would have won had he not skipped an entire week. It's that extra playing time that put Wright over the top. Hence my point that he won on quantity, which you termed "balderdash." I do agree with Johnny's point that Wright was probably closer to Beltran than he should have been, and that Beltran's lead should have been large enough that he could have held it even with a week off.
  5. On September 23 Beltran was ahead of Wright. Beltran sat out a whole week in September. Wright didn't. Wright pulled ahead. He won by fewer than two points. So how is that balderdash?
  6. In 2006, it was Beltran's idleness for the last two weeks or so that let David get by him. Schaefer is a mix of quality and quantity, and Wright won it that year on quantity.
  7. Those may have been road games, but they were home crowds. Given the low expectations for the Marlins, and the huge number of transplants who live in Florida, I have a feeling that a lot of the games played in Miami will have more fans rooting for the visitors than for the Marlins.
  8. Yeah, David has to be the odds-on favorite to get a fourth consecutive win.
  9. You mean silverdsl, I assume. Has she been by here recently? It seems like it's been quite a while.
  10. I don't know about the Post, but the News often publishes rebuttals from other readers. It can get quite entertaining sometimes.
  11. Voting for Wednesday night's 13-0 win over the Marlins will close early on Monday morning. http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=8584

  13. It could mean either. My take though is that he still wants to play.
  14. Inspired by a post in the Ruben Tejada thread in the Adoption Forum. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Got a little Fonzie in him, sounds like. Congrats on your adoption. Speaking of Fonzie, I read the other day that he was recently released by the Texas Rangers and he's reached out to the Mets to see if there's a place for him in the organization.

Here's the thread: http://cranepoolforum.qwknetllc.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7527 It was DocTee who gave Oliver Perez 0.2 points for that game. I'll dip into the database and remove the 0.02 that Perez netted.
  16. This letter appeared in the "Voice of the People" section of this morning's Daily News: ]Good riddance Alexandria, Va.: As a baseball fan with the utmost respect for the game's history, I would be distraught if Yankee Stadium really were being lost. But the American treasure Voicers seem to be mourning was torn down in the mid-'70s. Honestly, I'm happy the House That Lindsay Built will no longer be passed off as the real thing. Ted Shipp It may be interesting to see what kind of a response this gets.
  17. Wow! Makes me seem both smart and stupid at the same time.
  18. I did look for that, because I remembered it too, but I didn't find it in January 2006. Maybe it came up subsequently?
  19. Every time he says "J-Ro" I want to cringe.
  20. Yeah. Wouldn't it be nice if Santana has a terrific year, and Maine does even better? (It's April, when hopes are high.)
  21. How would an angry sports fan be proactive?
  22. Harry never really did it for me.

  24. At the beginning of spring training, I read a little item in the Philadelphia Inquirer that said simply that "scouts are saying" that John Maine is about to become one of the best pitchers in the National League. This was before his Grapefruit League successes this year. And that got me thinking about revisiting our original reactions to the trade that brought Maine here from Baltimore. I checked in the archives, but didn't get around to posting the links. This thread reminded me of that intention. As for me, at the time I saw Maine as a throw-in, a guy who'd be another Jason Middleton, or something like that, and mainly focused on the Benson for Julio aspect. I voted that I hated the deal. Needless to say, I feel quite a bit differently now. Anyway, let's travel down Memory Lane to January of 2006... Benson for Julio and "The Duke" John Maine Non-clever poll on the Benson trade Being John Maine
  25. Well, that's a different subject. It's one thing to know which young players are worth drafting. And then another to know which of them are worth keeping. Some GM's may just draft in order to get trade fodder.
