  2. In today's Daily News, Omar gives Willie the dreaded "vote of confidence."

  4. ="National Weather Service"]Late Afternoon: Periods of rain. Patchy fog. High near 58. Northeast wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Tonight: Periods of rain, mainly before 2am. Patchy fog before 2am. Low around 47. North wind between 10 and 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Sounds like a nasty, sloppy evening, but one in which a game can be played. I remember Patchy Fog! Whatever happened to him?
  5. Bud Harrelson is a cautionary tale about giving the managing job to old favorites. I'm glad, for his sake, that Buddy is now once again more remembered as a shortstop than as a manager.
  6. Oooh, good point! And next year he'd be playing at Shitty Field! Maybe he can change his name to Mike Cyprinid.
  7. I think that's Street Spanish.
  8. I think it's the surgery thing, AND the Yankee Stadium thing. Willie needs to hang on to his job for another couple of months if he wants to fill that spot, though.

And then there are going to be numerous potential replacements who aren't available mid-year because they're under contract (BV for instance). True. I'm not advocating it. Just saying it's an option. And even if a guy is under contract, that doesn't mean he's not available. As long as he's not managing another team, that is. But teams usually grant permission for their coaches to interview with other clubs for managing jobs. Bobby Valentine was hired away from the Mets to Texas that way in 1985.
  11. Bringing a guy up from Double A (Carp) to play every day for a contender seems like a last resort. It might work out, but I'd hate to have it be Plan A. As I said, Pascucci might be the lightning in a bottle. He's 29 years old, so he's not a kid. He's probably a AAAA player, but he may have a few good big league months in him, if not more. Again, I'd only consider replacing Delgado if we had to. (Because of injury.) I can't see cutting him to replace him with Val Pascucci or Mike Carp.

Where is Cito today? metsguyinmichigan wrote: I know Gary Carter and the team had a less than happy parting, but is he managing somewhere? I could probably make a list of 900 guys I'd rather see manage the Mets. And Willie Randolph might be one of them.
  13. I don't remember the particulars, but when he was hired by the Orioles, I had the impression that he was being set up to fail. Mazzilli might be adequate. I think Randolph is not much short of adequate. I'm looking for something more than that, though. I don't see Bobby or Davey returning, but I'd like to get the next Bobby, or the next Davey. From the outside looking in, I have no idea who that might be. I can point and say "Oberkfell!" but I have no idea what we'd be getting. When they hired Davey Johnson, I was disappointed. They were just bringing up some guy from Tidewater when there were experienced guys out there. (There were rumors about Earl Weaver at the time.) But Davey turned out just fine. Obviously, Cashen saw something that I didn't, and that's what you'd expect.
  14. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I'm not trying to disparage Fernando Tatis, but is really the everyday 1Bman for a contender? Not unless we could dial him back to 1999. The thing is, the Mets really don't have the depth at first base to just jettison Delgado. And if he's hurt, they're going to have a tough time replacing his production, even at its reduced 2008 level. Maybe you could catch lightning in a bottle with Pascucci, but my guess is that the more you play him the less he produces. (A similar argument has been made concerning Endy Chavez.) I think, unless Omar pulls a magical deal out of a hat, Delgado is our guy for 2008. And if Carlos breaks his leg or something, then we're not at all likely to be able to replace him with the kind of first baseman a contending team should have.
  15. You can cast a wide net during the mid-season if you're willing to have a three-manager season. They could fire Willie, let HoJo (for example) hold down the fort for a couple of weeks, while they openly search for a replacement. The reason it's hard to go outside the organization for a mid-season manager change is because the search has to be surreptitious. I know some teams have done the in-season, short-term interim manager thing, but overall it's pretty rare.
  16. I just checked, and was surprised to see that Tatis has only played five major league games at first base. I would have pegged him as Delgado's long-term understudy. And I suppose he still might be. Who's playing first base every day in New Orleans right now?
  17. I don't really think it was a crazy play. It took an extraordinary tag to get him out. He saw an opportunity (with one out; you're allowed to make the second out at third base) and went for it. As you said, it sucks that he was out, and Keith Hernandez was clucking that it was a bad move, but I can't really fault Jose for making the attempt. He's the guy whose job it is is to "make things happen." I'm much more down on Castillo for not scoring on that two-out fly-ball error earlier in the game. They're now spinning it to say he wouldn't have scored even if he had been running hard, but I don't buy it.
  18. What's Earl Weaver doing these days?
  19. Last call for votes for Tuesday night's win over Washington. (John Maine's game.) Voting will close in a few hours. (9 voters so far.) Voting for Claudio Vargas' game (Wednesday night's loss to the Nationals) will close some time over the weekend. We're getting really good turnout for yesterday's 1-0 loss. Voting for that game will continue until Tuesday. (I'll post a final reminder on Monday.)
  20. Yes, but that doesn't rule out bench-coaching. Good point about Manuel.
  21. AG/DC wrote: Isn't Davey Johnson just too big a gorilla to have hanging over the shoulder of a rookie manager? Maybe. But didn't Bill Virdon come out of retirement to mentor/bench coach a rookie manager with Pittsburgh? (I can't remember who, though. Lloyd McClendon maybe?) And to be honest, I can't remember how well it worked out. But I do remember thinking it was a good idea at the time.
  22. Art Howe certainly didn't work out too well, but I can't see how he can be looked at as a hare-brained choice. He had a long track record as a manager, and was just coming off a successful run in Oakland. Some of the suggestions above are realistic. (Like Oberkfell, for example.) I think what would most likely happen is an interim guy would be named from within the organization. He might stay in place for just a week or two while an open search is conducted for a new permanent guy. Or he could be given the rest of the year, and a chance to be named permanent after the season ends. Interim guys generally come from the coaching staff, so Jerry Manuel is the most likely candidate. I can't see it being Bobby Valentine or Davey Johnson, although I'd welcome either of them. One possibility (though probably not a strong one) would be for Davey to return as a bench coach/mentor if one of his former players (like HoJo or Teufel) got the job.
  23. I meant to close this one out yesterday afternoon, but I forgot. Anyway, here it is. You guys guessed 18 of the 29 pitchers who made one and only one start for the Mets. (Claudio Vargas, I assume, will move off that list in the next few days.) The 11 pitchers who were not guessed are in bold: 1962 Larry Foss 1962 Dave Hillman 1962 Ken MacKenzie 1963 Don Rowe 1965 Dennis Musgraves 1966 Gordie Richardson 1966 Ralph Terry 1967 Billy Wynne 1967 Bill Connors 1967 Nick Willhite 1970 Rich Folkers 1977 Doc Medich 1986 Randy Niemann 1987 Jeff Innis 1989 Blaine Beatty 1991 Doug Simons 1992 Joe Vitko 1992 Paul Gibson 1992 Tom Filer 1993 Mike Draper 1994 Frank Seminara 2000 Bobby Jones 2000 Grant Roberts 2001 Brett Hinchliffe 2002 Tyler Walker 2004 Dan Wheeler 2007 Chan Ho Park 2007 Philip Humber 2008 Claudio Vargas
  24. No problem. It was buried in the middle of a lengthy thread.
