  1. I guess it's possible that Jerry's a manager of average ability, compared to the rest of the 2010 guys. But even if that's the case, I'd take little comfort from that. I don't want a guy who's equally as bad as everyone else. I want a smart guy who'll be able to give the Mets an edge wherever possible.
  2. That's what I want too. Seven or eight Carters and one or two Barajases.
  3. I was thinking about who might DH, and Carter does seem to be the best choice. Although it would be okay if Barajas got the nod once or twice.
  4. How about 24 wins for Mike Pelfrey?

  9. I wonder who the emergency center fielder is? I'm guessing, in order: Francoeur, Bay, Tatis, Cora.
  10. My guess is that Omir will only be around for a few days. Maybe Barajas or Blanco are having minor aches and pains. And then maybe after those few days, the Mets will send Santos down and replace him with a center fielder from Buffalo.
  11. What's the plan for Tejada and Cora? Who gets the most starts? Has anyone said?
  12. Yes, but it has to be with one of Jesse James' girlfriends.
  13. I have to admit, you had me fooled. I thought this was going to be a thread attempting to put Oliver Perez in historical context.
  14. Oliver Perez is just wildly popular, isn't he?
  15. Voting for Wednesday night's 11-inning loss to the Padres in San Diego will close over the weekend, perhaps as early as Saturday morning. If you have votes to cast, please try to do so today. Schaefer POTG 6/2/10 - Padres 5, Mets 1

  17. No, I've never printed them out, although you do have me wondering how they'd look. And yes, this is the first time we've seen a 1979 card. Every year from the 1970's has now been done at least once. Here are the counts, by year. (Most of them, except for the most recent ones, can be seen on the UMDB Facebook page.) 1970 4 (includes one special post-season game card for 2006 NLDS Game 1) 1971 6 1972 12 (includes two "in action", and one traded) 1973 9 (seven players, one wife, and one organist) 1974 8 (2 sideways) 1975 5 1976 1 1977 3 1978 1 1979 1
  18. I like the rain machine idea. If only we had one in 2008...
  19. Most of the fonts are probably not exact, but I'm able to get them close enough. Usually I can get by with Arial, though I have to play with the sizes and the boldness. For the 1973 cards, I actually have to stretch the font a bit. I suspect the font you're really asking about is the 1970 one, and that was just serendipity. The font is called Kauffman, and I just happened to discover that I had the same font on my PC that was used by Topps in 1970. It's actually a pretty common font. I've seen it on restaurant menus, on postcards, in advertisements, and on the marquee in front of the Ed Sullivan theater. And thanks! Glad you like them!
  20. Well, Pagan does at least have a POTM in his past.
  21. That's right. Ruth was the starter, and Shaw, or Shore, was the 9-perfect-inning reliever.
  22. Babe Ruth is another pitcher who pitched a perfect game that didn't count. (Because his was as a relief pitcher. The starter's name, I think, was Ernie Shaw.) Of course, there's no way to be sure the feat would be as legendary if the pitcher was a much lesser-known player. But I think it would be remembered anyway. Most fans know of Johnny Van Der Meer, and his overall career wasn't all that.
  23. Yes, my impression is that we're definitely allowed to use hindsight in this discussion.
