  1. We really did. We wanted them to become stars; we wanted the Seaver trade to turn out to be a good one. Things sure have changed, haven't they? I really think there's a connection between the advent of WFAN and the huge increase in fan angst.
  2. Yeah. Victor Zambrano was born too late.
  3. For me it's more like equal parts Seaver and Hernandez. Maybe even a little bit more Keith than Tom. Anyway... Transactions: New York Mets purchased Gene Woodling from the Washington Senators on June 15, 1962. New York Mets purchased Bob Friend from the New York Yankees on June 15, 1966. New York Mets traded Kevin Collins, Steve Renko, Jay Carden and Dave Colon to the Montreal Expos for Donn Clendenon on June 15, 1969. New York Mets traded Tom Seaver to the Cincinnati Reds for Doug Flynn, Pat Zachry, Steve Henderson and Dan Norman on June 15, 1977. New York Mets traded Dave Kingman to the San Diego Padres for Bobby Valentine and Paul Siebert on June 15, 1977. New York Mets traded Mike Phillips to the St. Louis Cardinals for Joel Youngblood on June 15, 1977. New York Mets purchased Andy Hassler from the Boston Red Sox on June 15, 1979. New York Mets traded Bob Myrick and Mike Bruhert to the Texas Rangers for Dock Ellis on June 15, 1979. New York Mets traded Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey to the St. Louis Cardinals for Keith Hernandez on June 15, 1983. New York Mets sold Mike Jorgensen to the Atlanta Braves on June 15, 1983. New York Mets traded Jay Tibbs, Eddie Williams and Matt Bullinger to the Cincinnati Reds for Bruce Berenyi on June 15, 1984.
  4. It never fails. Whenever I see that it's June 15, I think of Tom Seaver and Keith Hernandez. I guess if I was a few years older, I'd also think of Donn Clendenon.
  5. Today is your last chance to vote for the three games that the Mets won over the past weekend in Baltimore. All three games will close some time Wednesday morning. Schaefer POTG 6/11/10 - Mets 5, Orioles 1 Schaefer POTG 6/12/10 - Mets 3, Orioles 1 Schaefer POTG 6/13/10 - Mets 11, Orioles 4

(Aaron Heilman may have had a 6.0 score in 2005, but individual game totals for that year were lost in the ezDebacle that occurred that year.) The other 5.99 was awarded to Alay Soler (remember him?) for his effort on June 10, 2006. On only two other occasions did a player top 5.9: Johan Santana scored a 5.96 on August 17, 2008 and a 5.98 on September 27, 2008.

  8. My eight-year-old daughter called Jose Reyes' leadoff homer on Saturday night, and it made her very proud. She then called a followup homer by Angel Pagan, but she was pushing her luck.
  9. If that's the case, then if somebody claims Matthews, they'd have to pay him the $20 million (or whatever) and the Mets would be able to keep the money from the Angels? That would be quite a windfall! I can't imagine it happening, though.
  10. Voting for both ends of last Thursday's day-night double-header split with the Padres at Citi Field will close on Tuesday morning. Consider today to be your last chance to shower Jon Niese with beer for his almost-perfect effort in the night cap. 11. So, what ever happened to Gary Jr.? Did the Mets ultimately release him? Or is he going to Buffalo or somewhere?
  12. Edgy DC wrote: Yeah, I'm having trouble identifying that human-flesh-colored, polyped, four-digit creature on the right. I noticed that too! I think the picture might be improved a bit with some cropping from the right side.

  15. I was at the game too. Last-minute decision made after monitoring weather reports. My second time at Camden Yards, and the first time since 1992. (I think this is a personal record for longest interval between visits to a particular ballpark.) We slept over in a hotel 7 miles from the park, near BWI and breezed home this morning on the empty highways. As stated above, lotsa Mets fans at the game. I didn't see a great variety of food choices once you got off Eutaw Street and into the actual park. Just a lot of sausages, pizza, hot dogs, nachos, and funnel cake. There was a "deli" on the upper level, but all they sold was pizza, hot dogs, sausages, and nachos. So much for getting a corned beef on rye with a pickle. Where were the crabcakes? Did I somehow miss them?

  18. With Bay sitting out one game yesterday, Francoeur is now the only Met who's appeared in every game this season. I wouldn't have guessed that he'd be the guy to win the Iron Man competition this year. He's the only guy on the team who hasn't received a blow all year!
  19. The only interleague game I ever attended (other than 1986 World Series games) was a Mets-Orioles "tilt"* at Shea a few years ago. Kris Benson hit a homer for the O's against Pedro Martinez. *You don't see games called "tilts" much anymore? That's one of those jazzy things, like calling pitchers "twirlers" that seemed to die with the glory days of The Sporting News.
  20. Especially while the Phillies are playing the Red Sox.
