bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 Girardi OUT. I'm guessing that WSH offers him a contract. That makes 3 playoff managers from this year who are out of a job.
Guest Mets Willets Point Guests Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 How does this square with "likeable overachieving underdogs" making an improbable run to game 7 of the ALCS? If any of that were true, shouldn't the manager be rewarded?
dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 I think this was his call to walk away. I don't see him going to Washington, though. I think he'll land in Florida, closer to home.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 Any doubt the MFY's kept this one quiet until the Mets were Calloway'd? Just in case?
dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 Wow - I just heard that it was the Yankees who weren't bringing him back - Just wow.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 Also, I realized this #LOLYankees thread was missing this beauty of a swing. There's a slow-mo after the regular-mo, too.[tweet:29301z4d] [/tweet:29301z4d]
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 He's already done the Florida thing. Got along terribly with his bosses there. Do you think he and Jeter have a relationship strong enough to fire Mattingly over?As far as sitting on this until the Mets left the marketplace, sure, why not? But that also means sitting on it until several other teams had snatched candidates off the shelves also. Hey, Yankees, sure, the Mets won't get Girardi, but now you won't get Calloway. Suckers.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 Maybe it serves us right that our 2017 MFY thread was titled "LOL Yankees" and they were one fucking game away from the World Series. In 2018 lets' just go back to calling them dickheads.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 Yankee fans I'm talking to seem to think the search will be quick and it'll be Jay Bell's job.

The team was a hair away from winning the pennant and going to the WS and you're all mocking them because your 70 win team .... did what exactly?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 Girardi is originally a Chicago guy. The Cubs are set but the White Sox are stocking up on prospects lately and may be a good landing spot for him in a year or two. This year's Yanx actually under-achieved their pythagorean projection by a whopping Nine games as their RS/RA ratio [858 / 660] suggested they should have been a 100 win team this seasoninstead of the 91 they actually won. I doubt that that alone was enough to sway MFY mgmt especially since it was coming off the 2016 when they managed 84 wins despite a negative RS/RA

It's a useful tool and should be part of the conversation, I guess, but I have my doubts. If the team wins a game by knocking out the pitcher early, and then runs up a 17-2 score against increasingly weaker pitchers (which seemed to happen with unusual frequency in this highly volatile season), but they lose 6-5 the next day, they look bad Pythagoras-wise. But were they? I don't know.I know you're not saying that, but I'm asking.

It's why I said that I doubt the front office was going to hang that on him because if they did they'd have to totally ignore his 'over' achievement the previous season.I mean I suppose one could rationalize saying that the manager won "only" 7 more games out of a team which just improved from -20 runs to +198 over one season (as the '16 to '17 Yanx did) so whatsupwitdat? but I think that's missing several forests while examining trees.

Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 better hope I don't get to the 2018 thread first, because I'm thinking of circus-themed thread titles taunting them and their dysfunctional organization. REEKS of Steinbrenner meddling. nostalgic if that nostalgia time wasn't mostly before I was aware of it.The Red Sox fired their playoff manager, the Yankees gotta keep pace.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 Sitting here wondering what the Steingrabber Era would have been like if hehad a Twitter account to punch Billy daily in the face with.

Though if you placed the cap on the ground between third and second if would have more range than Jeter did. That said, I haven't seen the Mets new spring cap. Hopefully it's not this bad.I'm sad that Mr. Met is being removed from the blue jerseys.
