Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 7, 2017 Posted June 7, 2017 Starting the year as the Mets #5 pitcher, and the one most likely to get babied, Zack Wheeler is suddenly the Mets most reliable starter, in relative terms.Rebuilt Persian Japanese hurler Yu Darvish slings for the Rangers. He last faced the Mets July 4, 2014 at Citi Field, giving up four runs in five innings and being unable to do anything with Lucas Duda. Scorecard below.Look for José Reyes to escape from the bench, for a day anyhow, possibly playing short and giving a day off to Cabrera, possibly playing third and pushing Flores to DH.[fimg=750:3c31s9zd]http://ultimatemets.com/scorecard_graph.php?game=8452&font=1[/fimg:3c31s9zd]

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 7, 2017 Author Posted June 7, 2017 Well, I called that Reyes return, but I'm surprised to see Flores sitting instead of Cabrera or Granderson. But I'm surprised every time I see Granderson.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted June 7, 2017 Posted June 7, 2017 Flores isn't sitting, unless I posted the wrong lineup.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted June 7, 2017 Posted June 7, 2017 Walker's sitting, hopefully as a result of that steamy dump of an at-bat last night where we had 1st and 3rd, 1 out, and he popped out to Beltre. Cleanup hitter my ass.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 7, 2017 Author Posted June 7, 2017 Sorry, I looked for Florry at third, and didn't see him there and jumped to a conclusion. Only his fourth start of the season at second, and I'd guess his first since Walker came off the DL.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Speaking of a big steaming dump, that's what Wheeler appears to be taking on the mound right now.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Wheeler gets the ground ball he needs, but Mazara beats the relay throw at first by quite a bit. Called out, but that will never stand up to review.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Wheeler gets a second ground ball, this time the double play is completed. So nice job by Wheeler limiting the Rangers to only 1 run after the bases being leaded with no outs. Could be big in this game.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 What's the average number of pitches thrown by Met starters in the 1st innings of games this year?Thirty? Thirty-Five? Forty?Wheeler gets away with "only" 27 in bottom one, but that's only because he got three outs on his final two pitches in that frame.
Guest cooby Guests Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 According to my calculations the average is 89 pitches in the first inning.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Looks good to get perfect-gamed tonight

MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Still only one hit, but it was a good one - a Brucekaboom.Later
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Wheeler is actually down to almost a normal pitch count despite that long first inning. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th have gone much quicker for him.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 This is going better, so far.Better also than Fboy's Little League game, which got called 14-0 after 4 innings due to the mercy rule. Yeesh.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 So Nolan has a statue* outside of the stadium down there even though his tenure as a Ranger was far less than his was as either an Angel or Astro and only slightly longer than as a Met.G/IP Angels = 291 / 2,181G/IP Astros = 282 / 1,855------------------------------G/IP Rangers = 129 / 840G/IP Mets = 105 / 510* I hope it's not anchored to the ground seeing as how they'll have to pick it up and haul it over to the new place in a couple of years
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Nice 4-6-3 DP to end the inning. Cabrerra got away with the neighborhood play as DeShields was baring down on him.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Jay "Love Me Two Times" Bruce. Goes Kaboom again.

Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Remember when the Mets spent most of the offseason shopping Jay Bruce and couldn't find any takers? I think he will be far more marketable going into the trade deadline this season.Jay has been one of the few bright spots for the Mets this season.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Wheeler now at a pitch count that's lower than the average through six innings.Would love to see him get through at least the seventh and better the odds of our nightly game of bullpen roulette.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Wheelr started out pretty shaky, but he was able to get the ground ball when he needed it. He has been solid and is amazingly only only at 85 pitchers through 6 innings. If all goes well, he should be able to get the Mets through the 7th (or dare to dream) possibly the 8th.
