Carreon, wayward son!

GAMES: This Met played in exactly 42 games, going 19-for-90 with three home runs as a backup catcher in 1990.
RUNS: Selected off waivers from the Cubs in May 1992, he spent that season and the next serving as a fourth outfielder, putting together a serviceable .268/.322/.382 line in 440 AB, stealing 21 bases. CHICO WALKER
HITS: Has the best numbers (.223/.351/.330) of any of the four Mets with 42 hits; served as a backup outfielder in 1998 near the end of a long career that even got him onto the 2005 HOF ballot.
HOME RUNS: This fourth outfielder went 7-for-13 in the 1969 NLCS, and is fondly remembered despite never being a star and only spending four seasons in New York, hitting 42 home runs. SHAMSKY
HOME RUNS: Finished sixth in the ROY voting despite only getting 109 AB, finished third in the balloting the following year, and then despite two more productive seasons, is generally regarded as a failure as a Met, hitting only 42 HR. JEFFERIES
RBI: Always solid, never great outfielder who bounced around the AL for a while, got traded to the Mets in 1980, driving in 42 runs, and then spent his most productive years in the 80s with the Braves and then the Yankees. CLAUDELL WASHINGTON
STOLEN BASES: One of the greatest players of all time, as he'll surely tell you; somehow only stole 42 bases as a Met. RICKEY
WALKS: Batted right, threw left? No wonder he only walked 42 times in parts of five seasons as a pinch-hitting specialist in Flushing. MARK CARREON
STRIKEOUTS: In 1998, he "only" struck out 42 times in 100 AB as a backup outfielder, although it feels like he struck out every time up after being acquired from the Twins.

[carnac] True story: Becker came up to pinch-hit in a game I was at that season. I said to my friend "he's striking out here." Sure enough, he did. [/carnac]

Tomorrow -- back on the regular subject matter, as FIVE different Mets amassed a Seaverian number of ABs with the club. Join us then to find out who they are!

"Get these wrong and you TARNISH MY MEMORY."

Who are these players with 41 career Mets ABs?

1. "I'm the subject of perhaps the quirkiest trade in team history."
2. "My entire MLB career came in 1975 with the Mets, where I went 5-13, 4.45. Maybe if I'd been able to get even one hit... but alas..."
3. "If you'd told us in 1995 that this guy would only wind up with 41 Mets ABs -- and be gone after 2000 -- we wouldn't have believed you. Ah, the vaguaries of pitching prospects."
4. "Just because you're a first-round pick doesn't mean you can hit the ball out of the park. Took me seven MLB seasons before I finally hit one."
5. "I earned two World Series rings with the unlikeliest of franchises before finishing my career as a pennant race bench addition at Shea."

Off to a hot start and we've got TWO new contestants!

1. "I'm the subject of perhaps the quirkiest trade in team history." HARRY CHITI
Ah, the vaguaries of pitching prospects." BILL PULSIPHER

Randy Tate has to be the most prolific of Mets pitchers who pitched in one season of big league ball and never appeared again, no?

"Seawolf said to start making these harder, so I'm throwing these at you submarine-style."

1. Picked up 40 AB as a third baseman in 1967 and was never seen on a major league field again. At least he had a good baseball name.
2. The best pitcher ever to come out of Hofstra, he picked up 40 AB in parts of five seasons a Met from 1972-1976, getting most of them in 1975 as a mildly effective swingman.
3. A middle infielder, he was acquired from the Yankees in 1977 in the first-ever trade between the two teams. Scored 15 runs despite only having 40 AB, because he scored ten of them as a pinch-runner.
4. Had 40 AB as a starting pitcher in 1978 (4-11, 4.78) and was never seen on a major league field again. Didn't ave a good baseball name, although he was related by marriage to a Mets HOFer.
5. A "AAAA" guy, he only got 109 AB in parts of four seasons in the majors with the Tigers, Mets, and Rangers. His 40 Mets AB came in 1994 as a backup infielder.
6. Pitched for nine major league teams from 1996-2012, including the first half of 2009 as a Met. Known as a "good-hitting pitcher," enough to total 40 AB as a Met.
7. "No, not that one. The other one." He got 40 ABs as a pitcher with the Mets in 2011 and 2012, but won a World Series later during a resurgence with a different organization.
8. Spent parts of 2013 and 2014 at Citi Field picking up 40 AB, and spent 2016 as a solid backup catcher in Minnesota.

I was just trying to pull into the lead using the same chicanery that BatMags pulled. I'll back off from now on.

2. Hank Webb fis the bill, but I didn't know the Hofstra part

5. Shawn Hare it sounds like, though I remember him as an outfielder

CHICANERY ALL AROUND! Greg nails them both despite me forgetting that Hare played left field.
