"We decided to go with a half-measure, because those tend to work very well, and history tends to look favorably on them."

No shit. I shouldn't be surprised but I figured they'd dance around this for decades.

I guess when you think about it, they already have.

I was watching the REdskins the other day and thinking, how dumb are they?

It would probably be the greatest marketing bonanza of all time if someone just said, "How about we go as the 'Pigskins' instead?" They wouldn't even need to change their cool colors! It would acknowledge its past (if questionable) history, be extremely football-appropriate and even recall one of the team's best era (I'm hazy on this but didn't the line go by the Hawgs nickname in their glory days?) Not to mention all the promos they could do in concessions and merch sales.

My aunt lived in NoVa when I was a kid and gave me a Redskins pompopm hat one xmas I wore every morning like this one for years. It makes no sense at all they don't do something.

I heard a suggestion about how what they should change is the logo, just replace the indian stuff with a potato and they can stay the Redskins forever without insulting anyone.
But as long as their owner continues to insist that he honoring folks with this name and as long as the league gives him cover for it then nothing's going to change anytime soon.

On the Cleveland thing, I have no problem phasing out Wahoo, I just wish their were something more interesting than a block C taking its place. Non two-name cities are at a design disadvantage in that area as one can do more things with an NY, LA, TB, SF, StL, etc. than with just a single letter.

Especially when you're in Ohio, and C can stand for Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Canton, Cuyahoga Falls, ... Circleville over in Pickwick County ... .

Alternatives ... you can have an Indian depicted with nobility and anthropological accuracy. You can change your name to a local tribe—the Kickapoo or the Chippewa. Or just go back to the early days when a team was named after their defining personality and call them the Cleveland Fellers, the Dashing Dobies, or the Human Rain Delays.

What was the question?

I would add a spider motif to the uniform. The team would still be the Indians, but every couple of years, the uniform would gradually become more spidery. What does a spider have to do with Indians? About as much as an elephant has to do with Athletics. But if the spider imagery increases while the Indian imagery wanes, it will become easier at some point to change the name from Indians to Spiders.

I still think it was a hasty decision to name the team after that Indian fellow, Sockalexis. He was a fine player in his day, but certainly no Lajoie. They can call themselves what they like, but they'll always be the Cleveland Naps to me.

They def did go by Hogs/Hawgs whatever. I remember dudes w/ pig hats and everything in the John Riggins days. Not sure what that connection is, but yah, that'd be a perfect one. And it's not like they wouldn't still sell the crap outta "vintage" Redskins stuff to the #hardcorefanz. They'd have twice as much merch to peddle.

Definitely.
We talked a while back about the heavy blue & red standards in MLB and this moves the Rox at least a bit further from the constraints of that pack.

Check out those socks on the guy closest to the cameraman!

MLB got a new "official" sock provider last year.

I wonder what drives the decision to make a change from purple to purple. I had softball unis that exact color for a few years.

As with greens and yellows and oranges, if you're going purple, go Big Purple.
