Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 The Cubs clinched their division yesterday, though they actually clinched at least a wildcard the day beforeWildcard-9/14NL Central-9/15
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 The Cubs clinched via the STL loss, though, as they lost to the Brewers, too. It sounds like they are holding off on the celebration until they win again.

I would hold off too.Speaking of celebrations, what is the protocol on Wild Card celebrations? All sorts of strange scenarios. Do you elebrate when you clinch at least the second wild card? I'm guessing the answer is yes if you, like the Mets, are out of the division race. It's probably no if you, like the Cubs are division leaders. Also, I'm guessing you don't celebrate again if you clinch then go on to clinch the first wild card. Imagine a bunch of guys pouring champagne with signs reading "HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE FOR THE ONE GAME PLAY IN"I'm imagining a tight division race that comes down to the last game between the two teams. The winner goes back to the lockerroom and celebrates with signs that say "DIVISION CHAMPIONS". In the other locker room, there is a celebration with signs that say "WILD CARD WINNER".
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 I would have to research how it has been done in the past, but if I were on a team, I wouldn't want to celebrate until the wildcard playoff game is won.OE: the Yanx celebrated last year.
Guest Mets Guy in Michigan Guests Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 The Cubs have postseason gear for sale: http://www.mlbshop.com/Chicago_Cubs_Gear/pg/1Would love to see some of that with Mets logos on them!
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 That reminds me; I still haven't bought any 2015 Mets N.L. Championship merchandise. I was planning on buying a t-shirt but never got around to it. I don't know if they're still available. And I'm also hoping that they win an even better title in 2016.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Cubs won their afternoon home game today via a walk-off HR in the 10th (Miguel Montero) so that gave them a good kick-off for their delayed clinching celebration.btw sportscasters, the Cubs did NOT "back in" to the playoffs due to the Cards loss late Thursday night. 'Backing in' is when you were unable to get your division/playoff spot on your own and only get it because someone else lost somewhere. The Cubs obviously could -- and did -- obtain it on their own.But that didn't stop me from hearing several references today about 'backing in' even though the only issue here had to do with timing.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Technically that's not true, but yeah, I agree.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 Cubs lost their 54th game today. That means they'd need to run the table to match the '86 NYM record of 108-54 which hasn't been reached by an NL team since.Maybe we should be like that '72 Dolphins team who break out the champagne every time the final team has their perfect season wrecked in the NFL.I know I'm willing to drink to it.

I never do, if'n they don't win it all. It just feels like a laundry-day reminder of oh-yeah-they-DIDN'T-win-that-time. I cherish the memories/sing the songs/rock the other memorabilia of 2015, but I don't buy the playoff gear.

Not that I have any World Series champs gear either. Too young for the first title, if such gear even existed at the time, and the only other one was more than half a lifetime ago. Here ya go, BG:http://www.ebay.com/itm/MLB-New-York-Mets-2015-National-League-Champions-T-Shirt-Majestic-Mens-M-NWT-/131927354317?hash=item1eb77babcd:g:WekAAOSw3mpXJiwo[fimg=444]http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/WekAAOSw3mpXJiwo/s-l1600.jpg[/fimg]
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2016 Posted September 24, 2016 Celebrate everything while it's fresh. Everyday life, let alone a dreary losing record, affords ample opportunity to not pour champagne. Earning your way into the Almost Nobody Else is Playing portion of the schedule is an accomplishment. It would suck (should we make it that far) to go down in the WC game, but it will be wonderful to have clinched a spot there. One miracle at a time.To each one's own on merch, but I have something (besides mental scars and lingering regrets) to commemorate every postseason appearance by. I'm a glass half-won fan.Glad the Nationals did not clinch last night. Their earliest possible dogpile will come no sooner than the same juncture we had ours last year, penultimate Saturday.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2016 Posted September 24, 2016 I definitely agree. If the 2015 season didn't leave you happy (after the dust had settled) then you're awfully hard to please. That wasn't a glass-half-full year, it was a glass-90-per-cent-full year. The only reason I didn't ever order that t-shirt is because I'm past the point in my life where I wear my Mets allegiance on my torso. Now it's limited to the top of my head, where a Mets cap is my standard headwear.

Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2016 Posted September 24, 2016 Playoff gear, not too much into that, but anything Mets with the World Series logo on it, win or lose, I'll always grab a handful of that stuff. In the very least, a hat. The Mets were in the series last year. Something I'd proudly wear on my sleeve or anywhere.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2016 Author Posted September 25, 2016 (edited) Boston clinched at least a wildcard by winning today. Washington got a wildcard by winning, and then the NL East when the Mets finished losing. The Dodgers win to clinch the west, and also would've clinched a wildcard with the win.Wildcard - 9/14AL West - 9/23Wildcard - 9/24Wildcard - 9/24NL West - 9/25NL Central - 9/15AL East - 9/28NL East - 9/24AL Central - 9/26 Edited September 25, 2016 by Guest
