Depending on the outcome of Matz's throwing session today, Collins et al are thinking about a situation where deGrom starts and Matz comes on as the 'piggyback' reliever after a set number of innings/pitches. The conditional target game could be Sunday afternoon vs Mini-Sodahttp://m.mets.mlb.com/news/article/201172064/jacob-degrom-steven-matz-could-return-sunday/
dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Could they switch off against lefties and righties and camp out in right field when they're not pitching, like McDowell and Orosco that one time? That would be awesome.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 They're both decent enough hitters that it wouldn't kill you too much, but I'm sure it's much more important to have them pitch in a regular rhythm.

That would be awesome.Sure, but since it'll be the (currently 54-91) Twins, Terry's going to have them switch off so as to pitch to their opposites (deGrom vs LHBs and Matz vs RHBs) y'know, just to make the game more fair.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Oooh. Danger. Pride before a fall and whatnot.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Can we use them in manner Baseball has done for over 50 years?
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Well, hold your breath all goes well.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 deGrom confirmed for Sunday's start.Got to release my breath.

TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Now news is that Jacob is headed for season ending nerve surgery. Suck it up, I guess.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Okay then!NEXT?[/bigpurple]
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Ynoa to pitch on Sunday.Yeesh. We're definitely going to need Lugo and Gsellman to keep it up.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2016 Author Posted September 17, 2016 Amazing how posts here go from 'Confirmed for Sunday' to 'Out for Season' inside an hour.At least it's not a structural problem I suppose, although nerve surgery can never be regarded as a Good thing.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2016 Author Posted September 17, 2016 So at this point we've gotten 121 starts from the season opening 'Starting Five' with another five or six still to come (We Hope!!) for Colon & Syndergaard plus maybe one or two from Matz - so let's call it 127 or 78% of the total 162 and 35 starts/22% from 'others'.That, viewed in isolation, is actually not so terrible and certainly teams, including NYM teams, have had worse seasons that that. The big problem is that the supposed #6, normally the first guy to turn to once someone goes out, was able to provide nothing and also that, rather than seeing the injuries one at a time, they came in bunches during the second half of the year. This meant that not only does the 7th starter get pressed into service but so do #s 8, 9, and maybe even 10, and all at the same time to the point where they're comprising 3/5 of the rotation during the stretch run and, Gulp!, the playoffs.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Fifteen regular season games this year, which means, really, that we have three starts that need to be done by someone not Lugo/Gsellman/Colon/Thor.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Didn't the Twins win the World Series one year with two good starters and one sacrificial lamb? (It may have been Morris and Blyleven in 1991.)I think, though, that they probably did it pitching their two veteran starters on three days rest. There's no way I can see the Mets doing that in 2016.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Oh well, we have done well without him, keep it up.Reminds me of Isringhausen Wilson and Pulsipher
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Or, y'know, any group of two or more modern starters.

And yes, they pitch them on three days' rest. A team probably could do that these days, but I don't think there are any managers who'd dare try. Maybe Bochy.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Horrible, horrible news. If we can fill this hole I will be amazed. I know we kinda have been, but through it all deGrom's return was on the horizon. Somehow we must sustain.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 Could be Montero. Could be Verrett or Gilly or some combination of the three. And Matz is still in play of course. Along with one day off.I'm not thinking the decision over which of them goes will be what keeps 'em out the playoffs.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 Yeah, that could happen. But I'm not thinking it will.

Maybe Bochy. The last time I can remember this being tried was AGAINST the Mets, it seems like yesterday to me but it has been 16 years since the 2000 St Louis Cardinals pitched the late Daryl Kile in Game 1 on the NLCS on October 11th and brought him back for Game 4 on October 15th. They had planned to bring him back for Game 7 if needed. I believe Garrett Stephenson was hurt? and they had taxed the bullpen in Game 2 when Rick Ankiel (he was a pitcher first!) couldn't find the plate.every team should of course heed the example of the Nationals and Strasburg - play to win now, because you dont know whats coming later. If I were the Mets I pitch Syndergaard on 3 days rest if he feels he can handle it in October. Colon too, he might even be better at it
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 Are any CPFers available to pitch tomorrow? Can you get a month or two off from work? If you don't like pitching there are other positions available.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 I was looking at the post-season schedule. The Mets could, potentially, get through the NLDS with three starters. If Syndergaard starts the wild card game (as I assume he will, unless the race remains tight and the Mets aren't able to arrange their rotation), he'd be able to start NLDS Game 3 on four days rest. If Colon is the Game 1 starter in the NLDS, they could start him on three days rest in Game 4.Wild Card Game: Wednesday, 10/5, SyndergaardNLDS Game 1: Friday, 10/7, ColonNLDS Game 2: Saturday, 10/8, Matz or Lugo or GsellmanNLDS Game 3: Monday, 10/10, SyndergaardNLDS Game 4: Tuesday, 10/11, Colon (three days rest)NLDS Game 5: Thursday, 10/13, Game 3 starterWould they do this? I don't know. I figure that if any starter is going to pitch on three days rest, it would be Colon. I doubt they'd do it with Syndergaard or Matz. If Matz is unavailable, having Lugo or Gsellman start the decisive Game 5 of the NLDS is far from optimal, but it may be the best option. The alternative is a four-man rotation, where the fourth starter pitches Game 4 and Colon goes in Game 5. I'd be more willing to try that if the Mets have won two of the first three games.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 We may be overthinking this.If Matz is available, they have five starters. If he's not, they have four.
