This team has already gone ten deep in starters so it's either giving one of the other spare parts a second (third?) chance: Ynoa?, Merrett?, Niese is no longer in the equation, or give it to a completely new starter: Gilmartin? Smoker?Unfortunately you have to go thru them and see who gets the job done. Who's next? I dunno. I liked Ynoa early on. Right now I'll just observe. And maybe pray.lil bit.I know one thing. We have a lot of arms on the team right now. If Terry wants to see what someone's got use onea those. Montero had all this potential, this promise, but that evaporated some time ago.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Cardinals don't have a hit through 7 innings, they trail the Cubs 4-0.

Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Which would have been worse? 8-1 or 2-1?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 (edited) In St Louis: 3rd pitch of the 9th inning = HR by Jeremy Hazelbaker. And now somehow this all leads to Joe Maddon getting tossed from the game although it's not exactly clear why B followed A Edited September 12, 2016 by Guest
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Cubs no-no evaporates with a HR by Baker (I think)...
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 WOW. Card kaBOOM in the 9th.Hazelbaker. WTF is Hazelbaker.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Still 4-1 Us.OOOO, Maddon gets run. WHy?
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 They just said Chapman hasn't given up a run vs. the Cards since 2011! Wowzers.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 I tweeted that too. Ha, what an idiot.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 Well, he was sent from Bingo, rather than Vegas, and he ain't going back, because the season is over./pedantI'm thinking the problem isn't Montero. It's taking the foot off the gas.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 Well, there's no real option for a 5th starter right now. Gilmartin? Ynoa? Pitch by committee? The total collapse of Montero has been stunning.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 There's a day off coming, so the fifth guy can be skipped next time around. And maybe in the turn after that, deGrom will be ready.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 Yes, or Matz. Serious question, what happened to Logan Verrett? I know I was down on him, but maybe he has some magic left for a start or two. Montero is puzzling. On one hand, I feel like he could still work it out. He seems to have good stuff. Low 90's fastball, a good sinker, and his slider moves. And we've all heard that he has, or at least used to have, good control. His problem seems to be mental. His fastball is 94 with movement. I don't know why he's so afraid to throw it. If he could ever get straight in the head, I think he could still be pretty good. The problem is, if history tells you anything, that guys who have this mental block have just as hard a time getting over it as someone with physical limitations.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 Yeah, I don't think the Mets have any reason to panic. They likely have deGrom or Matz returning, and if not, they have Gilly, Gabey, and Logey. I guess they thought he was close enough to effective thus far to try and give him one more shot. Failure happens, and they're blessed to have other options to turn to.As noted, the one early run and the lack of a will/ability to punch themselves back into the game concerns me more. If you want to be a post-season team, you can't just take the lickings from the best and console yourself that Minnesota is still on your schedule.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 Montero is next due to start on September 18. If they skip him, and move Syndergaard into that start, then they won't need that fifth starter until the 20th.

That's kind of the advantage of expanded rosters you know? But then again, I think I tend to be quick with the hook. I was all over Terry to pull him in the first. I think it's a miracle we got with only 2 runs.Inexcusable, though, to leave him in to give up four runs in the second. He have up a HR to the pitcher, then gave up a laser beam to Turner that found the bat of Reyes. After the double to Murphy, he should have been gone.Instead Terry left him in to face Rendon. This is not Jacob deGrom we are talking about here. If the kid has nothing, go and get him. It's September.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 The Mets look beaten.I'd can TC and Sandy after the season and start semi fresh
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 And what if they win the World Series? Despite their losing one consecutive game, it's still a real possibility.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 He was indefatigable, that Quitkowski. Unstoppable. No matter what came to pass, he never quit quitting. Those who knew him thought of him as a machine. While they were considering possibly giving up on the season, he was already quitting on the next one.
