"McCarthy ready to go out on his shield."

Wow, they left him in because to have someone ready they would have had to start warming the guy up before Mac took the mound.

Walk
Single
Single
Double
Double
Single.

And they guy who relieves him gives up a 3 run bomb.
Oyughgah.
9-3 SF

It's still only the 6th but that's it for me. I expect, no, I demand a sweep of the Phils anyways so for me this game is.....

.....inconsequential.

[u:jmsmq5ik]Pirates @ Cardinals, 1:10 PM[/u:jmsmq5ik] -- directly opposite Mets @ Phils and in some cases (depending on your location) replacing it on your TV screen from time to time.
Michael Wacha for StL. He was banished to the bullpen for a while but then the Cards decided that Jamie Garcia was even worse so Wacha is back in even though his last outing consisted of giving up 7 runs over 2.2 IP to the Reds in their 15-2 loss earlier in the week.
Chad Kuhl (who I've never heard of) is going for the Bucs. The former Delaware Blue Hen (9th round pick 2013) is a rookie making his 14th ML start since being called up in late June. 5-4; 4.25 ERA; 1.28 WHiP

[u:jmsmq5ik]Dodgers @ Giants, 4:05 PM[/u:jmsmq5ik], Free via MLB.tv
Clayton Kershaw is making his 5th start since coming off the DL. He's given up 3 runs (2 earned) in total going 3, 5, 6, and 7 innings in the four starts. He faced the Giants two starts ago allowing 1 run on 3 hits w/7 Ks over 6 IP
Ty Blach (pronounced: Block) for SF. 4th ever ML appearance, 2nd start. 1st one didn't go so well: 2 runs on 4 hits + 3 BBs before being yanked after 3 innings vs SD last Sunday.

Yeah, despite the fact that the Cards were a 6-3 winner in our 'Who'd You Rather?' poll, a loss by them is our quickest and surest way to meaningful October baseball.

Buccos getting it done, riding a 3-0 lead after two, with all the damage coming from one swing off the bat of Jung Ho Kang.

Antonio Bastardo may end up helping the Mets after all.

The Giants beat the Dodgers. Only one happy outcome today, but I'm quite content. I was hoping for a Giants loss so that they'd end the day tied with the Cardinals. Had that happened, then there would be two possibilities for them having to play on Monday: Both teams win on Sunday or both teams lose on Sunday. Now I'm rooting for the Cardinals to win tomorrow and the Giants to lose.

Remember how the Mets had stockpiled all that talent, but it was nothing compared to Houston's? Houston is out of it.

Remember that team that beat the Mets in the World Series last year, despite trailing in each game, and actually would have lost had the games ended at a more fortuitous time? Kansas City? They're out of it, too.

Remember that team, entitled by God-given right to sip form the cup of victory and dominate the civic and baseball culture? They are the Yankees, and they are eliminated.

Rivals of the last 20 years, Atlanta and Philadelphia? Going home.

Miami upstarts who seemed to be stealing the Mets' bacon midseason? Done like the seventh son.

Talent-laden hopefuls like the White Sox, the Angels, the Pirates, each with MVP talented superstars tucked in their back pockets? They're going home.

But the Mets? For the second straight year, they live to play on.

Not to make too much of the "back-to-back" years thing but that '99 team was better than the '00 version that made it a round further. That's one thing I'm hanging my hat on, if we get by Wednesday of course.

Sheer poetry.

You know, it's funny. With the Wild Card, you end up rooting for different teams to win or lose throughout the season. For instance, when Miami was starting to creep back in, I found myself rooting for Washington.

This was the first time I rooted for a team to lose, then win, in the same game.

For 7 innings, I rooted for Pittsburgh to win, so the Mets could clinch. Then the minute our game went final, I found myself rooting for St. Louis, so they could end up in a tie with the Giants.

So yay Bastardo!

Today is not meaningless Sunday. Today we root for the Cards and Dodgers.
