Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 The deadline is still a couple weeks away but the Red Sox -- currently in 3rd place but only 2 games out -- have gotten the early jump on things with three separate deals in the last two days.- Acquired 3B Aaron Hill from Milwaukee for the usual price of several prospects, a 2nd baseman and a pitcherHill was one name discussed here in various post-Sugarpants replacement scenarios. The Sox immediately stuck him in the lineup and were rewarded with two hits including the eventual game-winning RBI in the 8th - with several of their bullpen hurting (including now Kimbrel) they reached a deal with Arizona for Brad Ziegler, also for a 2nd base and pitching prospectZiegler had been closing for the Snakes and may do so for the Sox depending on Kimbrel's status.- also traded for utility man (and phormer Philly) Michael Martinez from Cleveland
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 I think the Mets need to realistically assess what their situation with Cespedes & Syndergaard is, then, if not hopeless, make a move for the best starting pitcher they can find. They could realistically trade from a group of capable ML starters (Walker, Cabrera, Reyes, Lagares, Loney, Granderson) and good-but-not-great comers (Hererra/Cecchini/Zimmo/Plawecki) + other lower-level prospects. If its hopeless, I think they can still move guys from the first group, plus Colon/Reed/Bastardo/Blevins.
Guest Mets Guy in Michigan Guests Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 I think I've read that there is a lack of good starting pitchers on the market this year. How is the rotation in Vegas? If this is a month-long bridge to Wheeler, is there anyone there worth giving a shot?
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 The 51s rotation is shitty right now. ERAs are higher in that league but there isn't anyone who immediately jumps out as the next man up.http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ibp&cid=400&stn=true&sid=t400Montero just gave up 10 ERs in 3 innings. Ynoa has been poor. Gsellman was promoted from AA and then got hurt. Sandy is going to have to use his big brain to find someone. ATL is taking bids on Tehran but I don't think the Mets have enough for him. Rich Hill (OAK) might be available and he's good even though he doesn't go more than 6 innings.
Chad ochoseis Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Montero isn't pitching well. My adoptee Gsellman just got promoted from AA and is injured (strained quad, I think...quads are the new obliques).Except for a few blips, Sean Gilmartin has gotten guys out at every level. I'd be fine giving him a shot in the rotation if it comes to that. And he's actually in the majors this week. And Ynoa? Sure, ynot?
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Talk to the 's about SP Rich Hill. Our AAA starters don't give me goosebumps,
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Author Posted July 14, 2016 Red Sox staying busy and ahead of the curve - acquiring LHP Drew Pomeranz, who just appeared as an All-Star in San Diego for San Diego, in exchange for a minor league prospect. All pending a physical, etc.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Sox certainly not screwing around this year, are they?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I think Jim Duquette sort of had Pomeranz at the top of the Mets' shopping list.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 The Mets should move Bastardo as far from Citi Field as United Van Lines is willing to take him.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Tampa Bay could be called about Chris Archer. Archer has had a bad start which should lower the price.
Guest Mets Guy in Michigan Guests Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Some speculation that Jon Niese is a potential reunion candidate. No thanks.

Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 I hope the Mets pass on any ofers concerning the return of Jon Niese. He wasn't very good during his first time with the team and he has been even worse in Pittsburgh this year. Plus he verbally trashed the Mets after he was dealt.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 If they have faith he can perform, I have no problem forgiving his alleged trashing, which was really just forcing himself to say that he's happy to join the Pirates.

"Comedic value," he said.I'll take me some Smiley.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Right? Inflated-ish secondary numbers, due to slight increases in home run/flyball rate and weird strand percentages. And he's a lefty.I'd give them Nimmo for the guy, in a heartbeat, honestly.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Didn't you go for Syndergaard for Ian Desmond back in the day?The team traded like 19 prospects for big league talent last season. They're going to have to pull up on the stick eventually. I think I can live with the team not having a big name #5 starter for a bit.GIVE NIMMO A CHANCE!
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Amed Rosario to the Rays for Drew Smyly.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I don't have any desire to trade Rosario for anything.
Guest Mets Guy in Michigan Guests Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 With Lucas beginning baseball activities, do we have a timeline on when he could come back? When he's back, does Loney -- who has been better than I expected -- have any kind of role? Does he have any trade value?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I think Terry said that we might see Duda in three weeks.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I lefthand think pinch hitter/part-time starter/defensive specialist is a fine role for Loney. It'd mean having a guy with only one position on your bench, and that's a luxury, but it'd only be for about three weeks until the rosters expand. And Kelly Johnson becomes your fifth outfielder instead of your sixth infielder. And if nobody else gets hurt (or traded), it'd mean folks get their wish of a De Aza-free roster.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 DeAza for Kershaw. DO IT, SANDY.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 seawolf17 wrote:DeAza for Kershaw. DO IT, SANDY.Only if they pick up De Aza's salary.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 HugWatch on Chris Sale, who was pulled from his start tonight.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2016 Author Posted July 23, 2016 (edited) FOX reporting that he's [u:1pwst9zl]not[/u:1pwst9zl] out because he is ill, and that the team will release a statement later.Rangers, who have been falling like a rock lately and have half their team on the DL, have surfaced in C. Sale rumors just recently.UPDATE: FOX now saying he was scratched from the start and [u:1pwst9zl]has been sent home[/u:1pwst9zl] due to a 'non-physical clubhouse incident' ... and that they'll have no further comment.Well that clears up absolutely nothing.
