Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Almost no new news on the draft front. Thirtieth rounder Eric Villanueva joined the team, and immediately had about as bad a debut as you can have. Coming on the sixth for the lowly Gulf Coast Mets against their Marlin opponents back on June 28, Villanueva walked his first guy; fielded a grounder off the bat of the second hitter, before committing a throwing error; walked the third guy to load the bases, and then hit the fourth guy.He was then relieved by Enmanuel Berihuete, but all four runners he gave up scored. Although only one run was earned, Villanueva has to wake up every morning with an infinite ERA. This was back on June 28, and the Mets haven't run the guy out there since. It's starting to get disquieting that second pick from the first round Anthony Kay isn't signed yet. There were reports as recently as July 8 that second-rounder Pete Alonso wasn't signed, but I think that's panicky fanbois, because we had him in the fold before that, and he's currently listed on the Brooklyn roster, but hasn't yet debuted. But Ward Melville's Kay, and the lack of activity on the back end, that's where the fretting should be directed. It'd be a shame to lose out on 20th-rounder Carlos Cortes, as he's got a little bit of Mazzilli in him. An ambidextrous thrower, Cortes throws left-handed when playing the outfield and right-handed when playing the infield. But he remains vocally committed to honoring his college scholarship. I mean, that's what they ALL say, as it's the only leverage they've got, but he seems serious about this stupid education thing.RoundPick #GuyPosSchoolStateStatus119Dunn, JustinRHPBoston CollegeMASIGNED131Kay, AnthonyLHPUConnCT264Alonso, Pete1BFloridaFLSIGNED3100Tiberi, Blake3BU LouisvilleKYSIGNED4130Paez, MichaelSSCoastal CarolinaSC5160Colby WoodmanseeSSArizona StateAZSIGNED6190Chris ViallRHPStanfordCASIGNED7220Austin McGeorgeRHPLong Beach StateCASIGNED8250Placido TorresLHPTusculum (Tenn.)TNSIGNED9280Colin HoldermanRHPHeartland (Ill.) OK, that is now officially the strangest thing I've ever heard of in sports. There was once some golfer on the pro tour a few years back who alternated between putting righty or lefty depending on which way he thought the roll of the putt would break ... but this is way beyond that.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 If the contract numbers AA has for these guys are accurate, then the Mets seem to have a few extra bucks to throw around, all the better to reel in Kay, along with those 11th-and-12th-round prep arms.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 And adding fourth-rounder Michael Paez makes this draft look pretty successful.
