I like statues at ballparks. I always take photos of them when I visit parks. I'd like for the Mets to have some.

That said, i don't think it's an embarrassment that the team doesn't have any.

I do think there's sort of an honors escalation type of thing going on.

Used to be that having a "day" for a retiring or retired player was a big enough deal.

Then it was a day and retiring a number.

Now it's a day, retiring a number and a statue -- to separate your super-greats from the rest of people with retired numbers, since there seems to be retired number inflation. And if you don't do these things, you aren't honoring your players enough.

Not sure what the next elevation will be -- holograms! -- but there will be one.

Yeah, I understand the frustration and the standing up for your man. I also understand the sense of missed opportunity with the new ballpark. But it's the sort of thing I'd rather be done right than be done forthwith. You make a mistake in this sort of thing, and it lasts for a long time.
