Bingo knuckleballer Mickey Jannis, who also made a surprise AZ Fall League appearance, took a no-hitter into the 7th last night.

Amazinly, he did so wearing uni #6.

Gave up a homer and stuff in the 8th but won 12-2 over Erie thanks to 17 hits by his mates.

Keep an eye on this guy!

I'm excited to see what our Jannis-headed knuckleballer can bring, but Bill James has written that it takes a bad (and desperate) team to give a chance to a knuckleballer, so he may need to move on to break through. But good for the Mets for seeing it through thus far.

Akeel's hard to touch, but his control is more of an issue a the higher levels.

Sorry he ruined your night. Say hi to Devo for me!

The B-Mets are through being cool. Rubber Ducks 3, B-Mets 2 in 10 is the final, thanks primarily to rehabbing ringer Michael Brantley, who went 3-4. But Gsellman didn't gsuck; 1 run, 3 hits, 7 Ks in 6 1/3, and he handed a baseball to a little kid in a Batman t-shirt hanging just behind the dugout. And there was some nice infield defense going on all game.

Dominic Smith lollygagged his way to first base on a grounder in the 8th, and got what looked like a rather unfriendly chat from one of the coaches.

Big news out of Bingtown is that an injury to Jeff McNeil has opened the way for Phil Evans to join the club.

Good news too as, despite the fact that he hadn't been hitting in St. Lucie, he was getting totally lost in the shadow of a torrid start from Amed Rosario.

B-Mets had a great week, with their loss yesterday ending a six-game winning streak. Robert Gsellman seemingly has little left to prove at this level, following up his stellar 2015 with a 1.82 ERA so far in five starts. And he's striking out a few more batters, too.

Wait, so they wound up keeping the name 'Mets'?

OE: I should read more, post less. New name to be revealed in October.

Not worth a full update, but Josh Edgin has jumped from St. Lucie to Las Vegas on his rehab road back from Tommy John surgery.

Meanwhile, Jake Kuebler isn't sure if he's in Heaven or Iowa, signing in April for the Sioux City Explorers. Team opens in two weeks against the Sioux Falls canaries, in the battle royale to see who is the real heir to the legacy of the Sioux.

It's been a tough week for the Binghamton Bumblebees. Almost nobody is hitting and the pitching staff has a bad case of the bases-on-balls.

The very Metly-named Casey Delgado had gotten off to a great start in St. Lucie, and had sure been looking like a heckuvan indy league reclamation project, but when he was bumped up to Bingo to replace and injured Rainy Lara, he got hit hard in his first start. Oh, well, keep an eye on him anyway.

Jeff McNeil had gotten off to a hot start, and had been seemingly playing himself into prospect status, but he's been laid up with double (!!) hernia surgery, and is out until mid-season.

The Mets are only a game below .500 at 14-15, and I don't know how they do it, but that still places them in a seven-game hole behind the Rubber Ducks of Akron, running away with the Western Division of the Eastern League.

So ghey! I do like the name Rocking Horses tho, I hope that one wins.

Binghamton Bullheads
Vote A local inhabitant of the Susquehanna River, a Bullhead is a bullhead catfish. The bullhead displays a tough and resilient character such as the Binghamton community.

Binghamton Gobblers
Vote A symbol of the rich hunting culture of the area, the "Binghamton Gobblers" honors the outdoorsman lifestyle and turkeys who call Binghamton home.

Binghamton Rocking Horses

Vote The "Binghamton Rocking Horses" celebrates the Triple Cities' rich history as the "Carousel Capital of the World."

Binghamton Rumble Ponies
Vote A tribute to the Triple Cities' carousel heritage, the "Binghamton Rumble Ponies" is a herd of fierce horses that no carousel center pole can contain.

Binghamton Stud Muffins

Vote While tipping a cap to the players on the field, the "Stud Muffins" celebrates the collection of carousel horses belonging to Binghamtonians.

Binghamton Timber Jockeys

Vote Combining the fun of Minor League Baseball with the rich carousel history of the Triple Cities, the "Binghamton Timber Jockeys" pays homage to everyone that rides the carousels.

Well, it has a history. They have, like, eight carousels. But only one or two of them can truly be called classics. And even those, while having the imprint of the master carver shops*, aren't masterpieces. If they truly want to honor carousel horses, a better name for the team would be the Painted Ponies.

I tend to question the authenticity of that Rubin account. Anybody have a link?

_________________

*There were three master carving shops whose works were broadly distributed in the US during the golden age of carousels: Dentzel, Herschell, and Philadelphia Toboggan Company. There were also lesser masters (like Illioans) whose work never caught on and you can barely assemble enough surviving horses for a single carousel.

Which is part of why I'm dubious.

It's a reality, though, that historically, teams like to get fake community buy-in, allowing the fans to vote for a new name, but securing the outcome of the vote by giving them a ballot full of five stupid names plus the one the owners really want.

What, no Binghamton Wooden Chain-smoking OTB Degenerates? Binghamton Guys Who Check The Ground For Discarded Winning Carousel Tickets?

Oh, they're real, and they're... um... spectacular. In a sense.

Posted

Why all these veiled references to carousels? They should just call themselves the Binghamton Merry-Go-Rounds.

Of those, I'd vote for Bullheads. They're all awful, but that's the least awful.

I only recently learned that Binghamton is known for a particular kind of sandwich. I'd have considered naming the team after the sandwich: The Binghamton Spiedies.

Great minds, bud.

Also, it doubles as a horsey thing, potentially, right?
(Also with you on Bullheads.)

I think they should honor Bingo-area native Johnny Hart and name themselves the BC's, or the Wizards of Id
Each player could be a different character and such, although, admittedly, it might be tough to get one of the macho athletes to be either 'Cute Chick' or 'Fat Broad'

I think those are both more or less fine ideas. The Binghamton Cavemen. The Binghamton Cartoonists.

Binghamton has been trying to brand itself as Carousel Town for decades. My wife is one of the rare birds who would actually get off the parkway to visit a carousel, and we found them mostly to be county fair quality — built to be packed up and moved, rather than fixtures. The Nunley's carousel was better than all or most of them.
