Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I really hate the 'Big Game' moniker. He hasn't exactly been lights-out in 'big games' this year. But it seems to have been surgically attached to his name, like 'all-important' has been attached to 'loss column' and 'iconic' has been attached to 'wooden cap'.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Kansas City at BaltimoreWhen: 8:00 PM ET, Friday, October 10, 2014Where: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, MarylandSportsDirect Inc.The Kansas City Royals are entering their first American League Championship Series since winning the World Series in 1985. The Baltimore Orioles, who host the Royals in Game 1 of the ALCS on Friday, are back for the first time since 1997 and are searching for the franchises first pennant since 1983. The Orioles and Kansas City present a contrast of styles but got to the ALCS the same way with strong starting pitching and dominant bullpen work.Baltimore led the majors in home runs and was last in stolen bases during the regular season while Kansas City was last in home runs but sat on top in stolen bases. The Royals do all the things well that teams need to do to win without hitting home runs, including playing great defense, but started to power up in the postseason with key extra-inning blasts from Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer. Even without Manny Machado, Chris Davis and Matt Wieters in the lineup, the Orioles pounded Detroit pitching in the ALDS behind a strong series from Nelson Cruz and consistent production from Nick Markakis in the leadoff spot.TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, TBSPITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH James Shields (1-0, 4.91 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Chris Tillman (1-0, 3.60)Big Game James was bailed out by his offense after allowing four runs in five innings in the wild-card game against Oakland and surrendered a pair of solo home runs before earning the win over Los Angeles in his lone ALDS start. The free agent to-bes big-game reputation outpaces the actual results as he is 3-4 with a 4.96 ERA in eight career postseason starts, including 0-2 in the ALCS. Shields picked up a pair of wins over the Orioles earlier this season, yielding a total of five runs and 12 hits in 14 innings.Tillman battled through five innings against Detroit in Game 1 of the ALDS and held the Tigers to a pair of solo home runs in earning the win. The 26-year-old completed seven innings only once in his last seven starts but issued only one walk against Detroit while striking out six. Tillman had no trouble going deep into the game against the Royals on May 16, when he tossed a five-hit shutout.WALK-OFFS:1. Cruz owns 16 career postseason home runs, including eight in 12 ALCS games.2. Kansas City DH Billy Butler went 0-for-9 with three walks in the ALDS.3. Baltimore LHP Andrew Miller totaled 3 1/3 hitless innings in the ALDS.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Know your animated Orioles. Or your cartoon bird, at least. With special appearance by the man who remade the Mets in the 1980s, Frank Cashen!

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I like pedestrian ballplayers with outsized nicknames for that they can't possibly live up to.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 That would be a good one.Super Joe is the most obvious. Gorfax is certainly another.Maybe Anthony Recker needs an outsized nickname.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 more outsized a nickname than "edgy's mancrush" anthony recker?
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 [fimg=400:21mwivzz]http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120404024951/avengersalliance/images/f/f0/Wrecker_Dialogue.png[/fimg:21mwivzz]Super Joe! We had a family of four that used to sitby us that had a whole song about how super he was.I wish I could remember the lyrics.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 metsmarathon wrote:more outsized a nickname than "edgy's mancrush" anthony recker?"The Crusher" would be a good nickname for him. It has a Bugs cartoon and a Ramones song to go with it and everything.[fimg=500]http://www.barkeranimation.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/16754ff79e5ed91fd2192ddb1cd7df33/9/7/978.jpg[/fimg]
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Dunno. Bad things happened to The Crusher.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Ravishing Recker.Except he really is ravishing. Maybe not always ravaging opposing pitchers, though.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 A broken bat bases loaded triple! Jeeze. 4-1 RoyalsOE: the guy says it was scored a double. I disagree.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 It sounds so much more dramatic as a triple.O's answer right back, score one, look to score more, but a great diving catch Gordon ends the frame.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Big catch helps Big Game Shields to live up to his big name.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 5-1 KC. Still an exciting game for some reason...so far. Yea, big hits, big catches, big pitchers...
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 And now it's 5-4."You never expect somebody you draft in June is gonna help you in September."Or October!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I'm getting a weird MLB.tv feed where I can hear the announcers following the game, but the visuals are exclusively one camera shot fixed on the Kansas City dugout.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Markakis is going to get a contract extension too, the way things are going.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Shit, my boys are in trouble. Good game here.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Thrilling game so far. Wow, crazy crazy
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Wow. Shades of Billy Martin. Kinda.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Oh that's definitely going to be challenged, right?NOPE!
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 oH NO. No, I didn't see this daylight they're talking about. His toe was there and the guy pushed him a bit. That's big, right there.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Oh, that view shows it clearly. Cripes. He was out.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Andrew Miller. The Mets and the Yanks should try and get this guy.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I think Squiggy is sitting behind the Baltimore dugout.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Now in a real speed replay it looks like he got pushed off second. The Royals are rattled.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Love me some post season baseball starring my second and third favorite teams, the not-Yankees and not-Cardinals.
