I missed most of the game due to my deciding that the bedroom needed painting -- but caught the last couple innings on the MLB At Bat app. Fernando Rodney is another Tiger bullpen castoff whom I was surprised to see still on a roster, much less in an important part of an All-Star Game.

I was convinced Jeter was going to get the MVP, like Mariano got it last year for his one inning. Radio team repeated over and over that Jeter was the oldest All-Star ever to play more than one inning...

Checking a comprehensive list of ... one player, I note that Willie Mays started the 1972 All-Star Game and played five innings at 41. I'm going to guess he's not the only guy who can put the lie to that claim.

Let's try, I dunno, Pete Fuckin' Rose. Started the 1982 game at 41 and played five innings.

Both older at the time than Jeter is now. Both better at the time than Jeter is now. And I have few charitable thoughts for Pete F. Rose.

White ceiling, and sort of an off-white leaning toward tan for the walls. Stripping off wallpaper in the bathroom was the worst. Wallpaper evil > Yankee evil. But it's close.

Did anybody catch Verducci's Keys to the Game? It was in the top of the second, and the NL was already trailing 3-0. So Verducci decided that the key for the NL--in an ALL-STAR GAME!--were "Productive Outs".

because cal ripken was 41 when he played shortstop in his final all star game, having switched with arod for the first inning. he played more htan one inning of course, though from the 2nd inning through the 5th, he played third.

previous owners had a strip of "chair-railing" wallpaper that I had to strip off. But that's just one strip around the center (the two portions were different colors) so it wasn't quite as bad as Yankee Evil in my case. The ugly way they slapped the lilac/brownish color on the floor moldings/floor knowing they were going to put in carpeting after though...

If only MLB had some kind of yearly gathering that honored the past as much as the present & future where most baseball people & writers are around along with a large video screen and a TV network to cover it all and a captive baseball-centric audience watching/attending, then they could maybe take two minutes out to do some sort of Oscars-style tribute to those no longer around since the previous time: Gwynn, Zimmer, Brosnan, Kiner, Jerry Coleman, etc.
Or maybe that would cut into whatever 'Up With People' tribute to school teacher/Army Rangers they had planned, or the part where the network-connected singer stretches the Star Spangled Banner into a 3-1/2 minute vanity project opus.

You can almost see where they're coming from, but it's awfully difficult sell considering the game was basically a three-hour tribute to Derek Jeter, while 69 other All-Stars all shared supporting roles.

You could perhaps see where they are coming from, if they weren't so obviously and absolutely lying. The truth is that they had their story. And alternative stories did not occur to anybody involved in the broadcast. Not even once.

But, you know, get set for next year's game to be turned into a three-hour version of "People Who Died." Because if there's anything MLB knows how to do, it's over-correct for a minor PR snafu, at least when it comes to minority issues. They'll completely miss (or ignore) that their real failure was not the snub to Gwynn (and really, did anybody here feel miffed that Kiner wasn't mentioned?), but rather the three-hour planned Jetergasm that precipitated it, and the 20-year fake, forced lovefest that led up to it.
