Free ice cream upsets Mets fans after the big game

You would think that everyone would love free ice cream. On June 12, USA Today reported that that Mets fans are upset that they were given free ice cream after the game. Why would someone be mad about this great deal? Related topics After a huge promotion, fans were given a free ice cream bar as they left the big game. Instead of being excited about it they went to social networks and complained about the free treat. A few tweets complained that the ice cream was given out after the game instead of before it. If they had given it out before, someone would have complained that they spoiled their kids dinner. The other complaint was that the ice cream was given out so late at night. If they didn't want to eat it at that time, they were not forced to take the free ice cream. There is no reason that they couldn't have turned it down and just went home without the free treat. This is what an ice cream cookie sandwich looks like.

Look: Mets fans have a heck of a lot to complain about these days. Their team is sitting 13 games below .500 with the second-worst record in the National League, following six straight seasons that finished somewhere between disappointing and downright miserable. The revamped, high-profile front office the club brought in before the 2011 season has yet to produce tangible results. Team ownership�s murky financial situation means no fan can really be sure when the Mets will again shell out a payroll befitting a huge-market club. It�s bad. But you know what�s not bad? Free ice cream. Thanks to a promotional giveaway, fans leaving the Mets� 9-2 loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday night received free ice cream treats. That�s something even the angriest Mets fan should love, right? It�s ice cream, and it�s free. Free ice cream. Hard to see how that could go wrong. OH BUT WAIT. Some subsection of Mets fans on the Internet are actually complaining about the way the Mets distributed free ice cream. This is a thing that is happening. There are a few others unfit for a family website. Extraordinarily attractive people enjoy ice-cream bars. There is no way following that a sports team could ever be so awful as to reduce its fans to complaining about free ice cream, no matter the terms of its distribution. This is on cynicism. This is on humanity. We do this for fun. Baseball is for fun. Fun, fun, fun. Ice cream is also fun. Baseball and ice cream in rapid succession might be the most fun. Peak fun. If you are a human person complaining about the way someone gave you free ice cream then I�m sorry to say � and I really wish there were some less harsh way to put it, but I can�t think of one � you are an ingrate. If you are somehow, for whatever reason, bothered by the very presence of ice cream at ballpark exits, do not take the ice cream. If you don�t want your kids to have the ice cream, tell them it�s for adults, or it�s bad ice cream, or that you don�t think they should be eating sweets so late, or whatever excuse you want to make for the way you�re just kind of being a scrooge and denying your child ice cream after he or she sat through nine innings of brutal Mets baseball in which the lone highlight was the time 31-year-old Quad-A lifer Omar Quintanilla hit a home run. what are the options:

1. free ice cream as you walk in. but then you can't go to the clubhouse store or the mets museum until you gulp it down, and you've also gotta worry about ferrying your sticky-fingered clan to their seats through a crowd of other likewise stickily-fingered kids.
2. free ice cream coupon. lousy cheapass wilpons make me have to go out and get my own damned ice cream instead of handing it to me? all i would want on a hot summer night is some yummy ice cream to chase down a mets win. but no, i get a slip of paper that i'll probably lose in my car or on the subway anyways.
3. no free ice cream.
4. ice cream as you walk out, capping a nice summer day, and serving as dessert. what, are you going to bed right away? like, before you get to your car or on the subway? whose day is this seriously ruining, other than the guy who's a little too neat-freaky about his car, and feels compelled to down the whole thing before he sets foot in his precious bimmer?

it always bums me when the ice cream cart closes after the 7th or so. late in the game is when i want my ice cream. to enjoy as the game wraps up or on the way home. who gets ice cream in the first inning, except to beat the line...?

I prefer ice cream on the way in. Rather my sticky fingers stickying up Citi Field than my car, plus it's nice to get a jump on traffic. Obviously coming in is when you're about to sit down for 3 hours and have more time to eat it. But it's free Ice Cream. I literally don't care when or where you give it to me, I want it.

that's actually a good and reasonable point. if they give away the free food on the way in, they pay for it twice. once to, y'know, buy for it, and twice because you're possibly then buying less of other food. it requires no big cream cabal or corporate pressure, only functioning a pair of functioning brain cells occasionally bumping into each other.

D-Dad's favorite. For a whale of a dad.

Hell, even when I was taking the weight off I wouldn't have begrudged free ice cream. I probably would have shared one with D-Dad. It's free ice cream, for goodness sake - the only thing better than that is Halloween!

Does anyone know if they announced the giveaway in the ballpark? They sure talked it up on the broadcast, so I would guess it was probably announced and/or displayed on the Batmags Memorial Scoreboard.

If they put it on the board that they were giving away the ice cream after the game that would let folks decide on their own whether they wanted to buy it or wait for the freebie.

For logistical purposes, giving away ice cream before the game means having it available at every entrance for around two hours. After the game, thirty minutes tops. Less of an issue with chips, which don't melt.

The only legitimate complaint would be that they were giving away free ice cream after the game instead of free beer during the game.

Seriously, some people are never happy. They just have to have something to bitch about. If you don't want the free ice cream. then don't take it.
