Military caps on Memorial Day

Uni Watch made what I thought was a great proposal four years ago, suggesting MLB teams wear throwbacks evoking military baseball teams of yore. Paul Lukas also pointed out camo is something you wear so the enemy can't see you, not exactly lined up with the idea of a uniform worn out in the open in front of 30,000 people.

Decent gesture and fundraising tool, though something about civilians/non-veterans putting on camo (as opposed to a fan putting on a team cap) seems...I dunno, creepy. Like playing military dressup.

Will Wright get to wear captain's bars?

I love my vets, but such efforts resound more meaningfully to me when teams elect to make their statements on a team-by-team basis.

I'd like MLB to just take it easy with this stuff...pro sports are such a dang big business in this era it's creepy..

Yes..freaky military dressup.

MLB..can the hats and just write a check to Wounded Warriors or such...

since i work with actual soldiers and stuff, on an actual army base and what not, i'd feel really poseuriffic wearing one of those. bring back the flag hats.

back in hte day there was a guy on base who drove around his Hummer H1 on base. the civillian version. it was nice - dark blue, and really sharp. as a boy/teen, i would have swooned over the thing. and i mean, i was fresh out of college. and i couldn't quite imagine any greensuiters taking him seriously. i mean, i don't know who he was - maybe he was a veteran and just had a huge affinity for the damned things - but it just struck me as kinda dumb and off-putting. because, when you think of it, where the fuck do you actually have any actual use for a civilianized HMMWV in new jersey?

I've had enough of camouflage military gear for a lifetime.
No thanks.

Military-inspired gear. Yellow Ribbons. Green ribbons. Red ribbons. Ribbons on top of ribbons. Black Patches. Yellow wristbands. Powder blue bats. Pink shoelaces.

I'm not down with all of this.

Lukas says red, white and blue caps will be back for the Fourth of July. This is Memorial Day's salute (MLB overlooking that Memorial Day isn't exactly the same thing as Veterans Day).

MLB used up all of its promotion brain cells with the Spiderman-on-the-bases idea.

not that i'm an expert, but isn't that the marines' pattern? the army's desert pattern has more dark brown in it. i'm not sure whether the air force uses a tan uniform, but i don't think the navy much uses desert colors. nor the coast guard.

and i'm pretty sure that while all of our fallen members of the armed forces loved their service and their uniforms and their fellow servicemen, what they lived for and what they died for was their country.

so instead of some ill-fitting misrepresentation of their memory, how about we commemorate them (if indeed we must commemorate them with commercialized pieces of alternative baseball kit) with the good ol' red white & blue. there's gotta be some variations on the stars and stripes that we haven't yet used up.

and then maybe we'll be neither glorifying nor trivializing war.
