I keep wanting to think that his name is Clarence, probably because I conflate him with Clarabelle Cow.

Anyway, I think he'll at least be good enough this year that I'll learn his name. I have a good feeling about Clarence, or Collin, or whatever it is. I'm not saying he'll be an all-star, but I think he'll be part of the solution if the Mets return to winning ways in the next few years.

As the righty half of a potential platoon with Nieuwenhuis, he'll initially get less playing time than Kirk, but I wouldn't be surprised if he does well enough to take away some of Kirk's starts against righties.

.270 batting average. He'll lead the team in triples.

with a good glove and decent speed, he'll be our 4th OFer, spelling each of our LHed starting OFers from time to time. I don't think he'll hit enough to play regularly, but i think that's true of our starting OF too, so he may get more ABs by default... and by "default" i mean da fault of our GM for not getting even one legit starting OFer. If he ends up in a platoon with Nieuwenheis, they could combine for the most Ks ever from the CF position.

And steals. But .270 sounds a little high. I'll say .255 -4-31.

If he could spell Nieuwenhuis, now that would be something.

I hope that he delights us half as much as Z's GIF delights me.

He's the kind of player-- short, take-the-extra-base "sparkplug"-- who gives Terry a halfie, and he seems equipped to handle at least two open slots on the roster (RH-part-time OF; OF-who-plays-all-positions); unless he gets hurt or shoots somebody (or something injectable) between now and then, I expect he'll accompany the team up north.

The walk rates are nice, and-- SSS-driven conclusion alert-- he really DOES seem to maximize his talent. If used properly-- vs. lefties, mostly; MAYBE slightly more than a straight platoon in CF-- he can be VERY useful, I think (like, .285/.370/.420-ish... really).

I suspect, though, that Terry will fall in love. Assuming a Byrdly fall to the fifth-OF slot, I think we get More Cowgill... but it'll look suspiciously like More Kirk in a mirror.

380 PAs, .268/.338/.390, 45 R, 4 HR, 36 RBI, 17 XBH

He'll have a higher OPS than Duda, Niewenhuis, or Baxter, but won't see full-time AB's until July.

I'd be thrilled if provided what Joe McEwing did in 2001 (.283/.342/.449). I wouldn't be surprised if he puts up Joe McEwing's line from 2003 (.241/.309/.291). Anything's better than Joe McEwing in 2002 (.199/.242/.296).

He's my favorite new Met.

This guy's been reminding me of Joe McEwing ever since the Mets got him. Which means I'm gonna hate him. Because like McEwing, he looks like he'll be the next super crappy scrub that the Mets hype to absurd levels. And it's happening already.

How could you predict those numbers while simultaneously declaring Cowgill your new favorite Met?

I may be a little weird, but my "favorite Met" has rarely been one of their best players (other than the Jose Reyes years)...as a kid, Buddy Harrelson was my favorite Met, and statistically he was horrible...

Predict? I'd say I was wildly all over the map.

Joe McEwing put up vastly inconsistent numbers from 2001-2003. But that didn't mean he wasn't my favorite player during that time while playing on some mediocre to bad teams.

I like Collin's hustle. This team is going to be mediocre to bad. I'm hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst.

that is the Mets fan battle cry in most of the Mets seasons that I have endured...A little more accurate of a "Mets motto" than some of the corny ones like "The Magic is back" that the Mets have come up with over the years...

I like that he plays hard. I like that he's-- smartly (apparently)-- aggressive on the bases. I like that he might be part of solving two issues with this starting lineup/offense, for cheap. Maybe.

But I have the feeling that fan overreaction to this guy is going to chafe me like cardboard underpants.

HOPE FOR THE BEST, EXPECT THE WORST (lyrics by Mel Brooks, from THE 12 CHAIRS)

Hope for the best, expect the worst
Some drink champagne, some die of thirst
No way of knowing
Which way its going
Hope for the best, expect the worst!

Hope for the best, expect the worst
The worlds a stage, were unrehearsed
Some reach the top, friends, while others drop, friends
Hope for the best, expect the worst!

I knew a man who saved a fortune that was splendid
Then he died the day hed planned to go and spend it
Shouting Live while youre alive! No one will survive!
Life is sorrow - - here today and gone tomorrow
Live while youre alive, no one will survive - - theres no guarantee

Hope for the best, expect the worst
You could be Tolstoy or Fannie Hurst
You take your chances, there are no answers
Hope for the best expect the worst!

I knew a man who saved a fortune that was splendid
Then he died the day hed planned to go and spend it
Shouting Live while youre alive! No one will survive!
Life is funny - - Spend your money! Spend your money!
Live while youre alive, no one will survive - - theres no guarantee??

Hope for the best, expect the worst?
The rich are blessed, the poor are cursed?
That is a fact, friends, the deck is stacked, friends

Hope for the best, expect the -
(even with a good beginning, its not certain that youre winning,
even with the best of chances, they can kick you in the pantses)?
Look out for the - - watch out for the worst!
Hey!

This pretty much applies to the whole team.

Adam Rubin wrote:
PHILADELPHIA -- John Ricco acknowledged the Mets are soliciting trade offers for outfielder Collin Cowgill, who was designated for assignment after Tuesday's game in Atlanta.

The assistant GM added, though, that the Mets would try to get Cowgill through waivers and send him to Triple-A Las Vegas if they were unable to get a suitable deal rather than release Cowgill. Cowgill can be in limbo for up to eight days before the Mets initiate the waiver process.

Cowgill, who was acquired from the Oakland Athletics last offseason for minor league infielder Jefry Marte, hit .180 with two homers in 61 at-bats with the Mets.

I wonder if working the phones for trading possibilities is part of Ricco's portfolio. The rest of the braintrust gives him parameters for possible deals, he spends three days making calls, brings them back the offers he's been able to hammer out, and they tell him he did it all wrong.
