Just off Vic's list, I've seen pretty much the kid movies (Lorax, Brave, Paranorman, Ralph), plus The Hunger Games. Want to see Ted, Vampire Lincoln, Hobbit, and Django.

(We don't do movies much.)

I threw up a poll for every flick I saw this year, so they should all be here. Do the community a solid and do the same in 2013!

I saw no films in 2012.

Is that the complete list of 2012? Then I missed a few. Saw Magadascar 3, Star Wars 3D, Pirates! Band of Misfits, and the indescribably awful Casa De Mi Padre.

And add Sasha Baron Cohen's "The Dictator" to my "want to see" list, as part of it was filmed out here.

Posted

I went to a multiplex last weekend to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Turkey, and walking around the lobby, virtually every poster and cardboard cutout features somebody pointing a big sexy gun at me. At least three of the previews shown before Bilbo and Thorin go to Erebor were set amidst an apocalyptic scenario.

You see a film in the wake of Sandy Hook, you can't avoid it.

We hardly get to the movies, but Silver Linings Playbook was the one that I made an effort to get to see, and it was totally worth it.

Judging from the above list, I didn't have a very movie-going year.
In rough order of goodness:

Argo
Premium Rush
Looper
The Grey
Ted
Safe House

In rough order of quality, not including re-releases:

AVENGERS
CABIN IN THE WOODS
DARK KNIGHT RISES
THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS
BRAVE
GOON
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Might be my least-fillum-ic year yet.

This looks like my list.

Moonrise Kingdom
Safety Not Guaranteed
The Avengers
21 Jump Street
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
Dr. Seuss' the Lorax
Ice Age: Continental Drift
Jeff, Who Lives at Home
Liberal Arts
ParaNorman
Rise of the Guardians
Ted
The Dictator
The Hunger Games
The Pirates! Band of Misfits
Why Stop Now

I'd still like to get to THIS IS 40, LINCOLN, DJANGO, ARGO and if what I read is accurate any/all 4 will top my 2K12 list. Was disappointed with most of what I saw this year.

It's hard to put all these in order, as they are all about the same. (Edit, adding in 3 films I forgot and/or weren't listed above)

Safety Not Guaranteed
Chronicle
The Dictator
Oslo, Aug. 31
Jeff, Who Lives at Home
The Hunger Games
The Avengers
Liberal Arts
Why Stop Now
21 Jump Street
Ted
Klown
Moonrise Kingdom

Cartoons and Kids Movies
None of these were outstanding, none were terrible (well, Ice Age deserves its spot on the caboose, but otherwise).
ParaNorman
Rise of the Guardians
The Pirates! Band of Misfits
Dr. Seuss' the Lorax
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
Ice Age: Continental Drift

If the Golden Globes counting THE INTOUCHABLES as a 2011 film then I saw that, too (on a plane).

Revised list:

SEARCHING FOR SUGARMAN
SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
DJANGO UNCHAINED
MOONRISE KINGDOM
BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD
LINCOLN
ARGO
THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES

DGA nominations:

Ben Affleck - ARGO
Ang Lee - LIFE OF PI
Stephen Spielberg - LINCOLN
Kathryn Bigelow - ZERO DARK THIRTY
Tom Hooper - LES MISERABLES

Hooper over Tarantino? I don't think so. LES MIZ was nearly ruined by his direction.

Best Picture Oscar nominees
http://cdn.media.oscar.abc.com/media/2013/pdf/2013/nominees.pdf

"Beasts of the Southern Wild"
"Silver Linings Playbook"
"Zero Dark Thirty"
"Lincoln"
"Les Misrables"
"Life of Pi"
"Amour" (foreign)
"Django Unchained"

the only surprises here i guess are the inclusion of the foreign language film AMOUR (which is somehow also eligible as best foreign language film) and the exlusions of MOONRISE KINGDOM, THE MASTER and FLIGHT, which all got some pre-nomination buzz.

Also:

[u:1vbmervd]Animated Feature Film[/u:1vbmervd]

"ParaNorman"
"The Pirates! Band of Misfits"
"Wreck-It Ralph"

Amour is from Austria? And they made it in French?

I saw The Impossible last week, and judging from the credits, it had every appearance of being a Spanish-made film, but it was entirely in English. Is this a new trend?

Also, I'm wondering, if Amour can crossover and be nominated in two categories, has a documentary ever been nominated as best picture? Or an animated film since that category was created?

I'm pretty sure that Beauty and the Beast was the last animated film to be nominated for Best Picture (and it should have won - IMO it was better than Unforgiven), but that was the last year before the Best Animated Film category was created.

Pretty sure a documentary has never been nominated for best picture. Several times, however, that foreign films have also been nominated for best picture. I believe the last time might have been Life Is Beautiful and also The Postman (Il Postino) as opposed to the Kevin Costner The Postman which wouldn't make anyone's shortlist of anything positive.

It's rumored that due to suspicions of CGI enhancements in many of last year's films, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences won't be giving Oscar awards to any of these films.
