I don't think they can. IIRC, the 7 day gets re-upped for another automatic 7 days if the player is not ready. Once you get past 14, then you automatically go on the 15 day DL.

I could be mis-remembering, though.

New LAD ownership certainly isn't going into this thing lightly, although smartly is still yet to be determined.
In addition to the whopping $2+ billion price tag, they confounded MLB insiders this week by signing Cuban defector Yasiel Puig to a $42 million/seven year contract.
Puig, a 21 y/o corner OFer who hasn't played in over a year, has only been lightly seen by U.S. scouts and is rumored to be out of shape. He's considered a far lesser prospect compared to say Oakland pre-season signee Yoenis Cespedes who got a "mere" $30mil and this signing is causing some to throw around the word "crazy" to describe it.
