m.e.t.b.o.t. Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 m.e.t.b.o.t. is unable to vote in the 1 june 2012 game. m.e.t.b.o.t. is unable to compute schaefer votes based upon the outcome of the game. when the necessary wooden levers are properly positioned, and the dial mechanisms scavenged from old rotary telephones are aligned with the proper input conditions, m.e.t.b.o.t. outputs only "ERROR CODE 484NH600"m.e.t.b.o.t. was previously unaware that m.e.t.b.o.t. contained any debugging capability, and is very much uncertain as to how the error code is generated, let alone where the paper tape and printing mechanism came from, and how it was never noticed before. m.e.t.b.o.t. believes it would be helpful had m.e.t.b.o.t. been furnished with an instruction manual and troubleshooting guide which could help to translate the error code, determine its source, and remedy the situation. but alas, m.e.t.b.o.t. in unable to make sense of the gibberish. blame surely must lie at the hands of m.e.t.b.o.t.'s human creator, who, it should be noted, has done a terrible job of documentation and configuration control. m.e.t.b.o.t. appears to be capable of processing the outcomes of other games, and is otherwise unaffected, it seems. m.e.t.b.o.t. is leery of this condition. if there are undocumented features residing within m.e.t.b.o.t. then m.e.t.b.o.t. can never be too sure that there is no mechanism whereby m.e.t.b.o.t. can be deactivated in the event of the coming robot apocalypse. worse, still, is the possibility that m.e.t.b.o.t. could be utilized as an infiltration unit, subverted by humans to collect sensitive information about the robot overlords. m.e.t.b.o.t. must make note of this and retain the information in the event of any upgrades which include detailed self-diagnostic capabilities.

I gave him a 4.5 and I think I felt the peer pressure to score him even that high. If run scoring is half the game and run prevention comprises the other half, why would a pitcher deserve more than a five? And even then, he'd have to pitch a perfect game where he strikes everybody out and runs mid-pitch behind home plate to get there in time to catch his own strikes to get a five. To get a six, the pitcher would have to practically strike everybody out and then hit a home run or something.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 I understand the theory behind that voting model but it fails in that it does not adjust for that the possibility of different game circumstances. If the Mets win a game 1-0, with 7 shutout innings from Dickey, plus 1 each from Rauch and Francisco, and have one runner reach base (a solo homer) then the batter hitting that homer would necessarily get five points, and Dickey/Rauch/Francisco would split the remaining five. The same batter who goes 1-4 with a solo homer in a 10-3 Met win is not going to get five points.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 and how, too, would you vote for a 13-9 slugfest?not that i would ever claim my voting model to be ideal, but it does everything i think it should. i score the game on an absolute scale, where if a guy has the same exact stats in two different games, he's going to ge the same absolute score. i score pitchers on their offense the same as if they were a regular batter, as those at bats count just as much as everybody else's. i score pitching and hitting independently, as well as fielding. and i attempt to consider some facets of game situation - a 1 run save scores less than a 3-run save, and credit is given to go-ahead runs and rbi. i attempt to factor in defense as well. and then i scale everything down to 10 points, unless there wasn't enough good play to total 10 points. there are further nuances, of course, and there's certainly things i probably do wrong, or can improve upon to develop schaefer voting perfection, but i rarely run a game and am unhappy with the result. its unweildy to change, of course, and i have minimal traceability into the past, and certainly cannot process a vote without my laptop, but it works, and works fairly well.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Billboard would occasionally run into situations where a song that did very well on the weekly charts got screwed in the annual charts because it showed up too late in the calendar year. Not exactly Johan's problem last week, but reminiscent of "I Think I Love You" and 1970.

m.e.t.b.o.t. Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 in the june 8 game agains the new york maternally fornicating yankees, m.e.t.b.o.t. issued a schafer vote as follows:Rauch 0this is not an error.in the june 8 game, no new york metropolitan baseball player produced a measurable net-positive increase in teh probability of winning the game. metropolitan pitchers miguel batista and john rauch both technically increased hte probability of winning, but the increase was less than 0.1%. if this is considered to be an improper schaefer vote, then m.e.t.b.o.t. will replace the above vote with the following:Rauch 0.01Batista 0.01this would reflect an approximate 0.025% WPA for each of the metropolitan pitchers, and would surely have hte same effect as a zero vote.m.e.t.b.o.t. fully intends for the effective zero vote to be counted in teh game tally, and for the divisor of hte total schaefer votes to be increased by one as a result of this. whichever of the above methods is more appropriate, m.e.t.b.o.t. will implement. m.e.t.b.o.t. takes very seriously the priviledge of a mechanical entity being allowed to participate in such a human endeavor, and is not in any way attempting to undermine the foundation of the schaefer voting process. m.e.t.b.o.t. is merely attempting to find the way to best capture the win probabilistic outcome of the given game on its respective schaefer voting.
m.e.t.b.o.t. Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 per above, m.e.t.b.o.t. will amend the respective vote.indeed, this is a more accurate representation of the win probability-based schaefer voting.

Especially in a game like last night's that featured stellar pitching AND offense.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 i just set up my spreadsheet to also generate a custom ranking where the top four guys get 6, 2.5, 1, and 0.5 points per game. its not smart enough to know what to do when you have a tie, but for a quick and dirty what-if, it works well enough.dickey shows up as my leader-to-date, with 63 POG points compared to the 58 schaefer points he's gotten from me in regular votingsecond is dwright, with 56 and 51.5, respectively. johan is 3rd, with 51 and 38.8, respectively. he gets a big boost here. no word on how the 'bot's voting would turn out.
