Obviously I'm missing something here - bold is mine

Displaying New York chutzpah, Radomski testified that he had taken steroids and HGH for 15 years, and then proudly declared, "I don't drink, and I don't do any drugs."

"I'm a health nut," he added. "I take care of my body."

Radomski cooperated with investigators and pleaded guilty to money laundering and distribution of a controlled substance in 2007. He was sentenced to five years' probation and fined $18,000. He said he's started his own supplement company, including "a fat burner and a natural testosterone builder."

I don't remember this NY chutzpah when this first broke.

Verdict imminent.

He's an asshole, that's my verdict.

One that would certainly be upheld on appeal.

Holy shit, he got off.

And didn't the conventional wisdom always used to be that they government wouldn't bring you to trial if they didn't have enough to convict?

Yeah, I think it depends on which arm of the government.

I think it's getting harder and harder to get juries to convict without the gun a-smoking these days. Maybe it's too many CSI shows creating a level of expectation of forensic certainty. Maybe it's the number of death row exonerations. Maybe it's because we never hear about juries in the news unless they screw it up. Maybe it's because defense attorneys are the ones painted as heroes in the media. Maybe it's all Clinton's fault. Maybe it's not a fault at all, but rather it's as it should be. But it's harder.

It also doesn't help that:

1. The government screwed up the first time around; and
2. They had a total asshole (and liar) for a star witness.

That being said, you can't discount the jurors-are-idiots factor either.

Clemens should have been put on trial for his assault on Mike Piazza with a broken baseball bat, witnessed by 50,000 people and captured on tape.

Tom Verducci no doubt preparing to use the acquittal to justify a Hall of Fame vote.

They should take the shards from Piazza's broken bat and use them to stake the (fat coward, bat tossing,) motherfucker out over an ant hill.

Time heals all wounds, including needle marks.
By the time he's eligible for the Hall voting, the Yankees will have had enough time to schedule enough "He's a good guy" events to make most of the voters forget why they would have kept him out.
I heard on WCBS that they've already started planning such an event.

Clemens you mean? That's December of this year, so they'd better hurry.
