Pretty big-ass trade of young prospects. MFYs throw in Noesi and get back another good pitching prospect Campos, from M's.

Also sign Kuroda to 1year deal, Internetz sez

F the MFYs

why does everyone 'roll over' for the Yankees it feels like? Supposedly they wanted Nova and eventually gave in. Yankees were clearly desperate.

MFY's still have catching prospect Austin Romine..

Pineda would be our 1.

I'll take our mountaineer over Pineda. But yeah, another massive guy pitching for the Yanks.

They should just get Jonathan Broxton and be done with it.

Nice timing coming as it does on the heels of Richard Justice's article on MLB.com today about how quiet the Yanx are this winter and about how this team under Cashman, unlike the days of the ghosts of George past, is content to stick with what he's got, etc.
Got to hand this to the Yanx anyway, they tend to get BIG deals done and tend to get them pulled off with a minimum of pre-trade leaks.

Seattle has Justin Smoak at 1B so I guess they're content to have Montero as a very young DH and maybe part-time catcher.
Supposedly the Ms have more pitching on the way than hitting (like last June's #2 overall LHP Danny Hultzen from UVA) which is what probably allowed them to send a talent like Pineda away, plus that whole thing about hitters being more projectable and Pineda did have some injury concerns last year and all ... but I'm still not sure I would have made that deal if I were them.
This Jose Campos guy is talked about as having a real good arm but also only 18 y/o and hasn't been out of short-season ball yet.

Montero did .328/.406/.590, 4 HRs, 8 XBH and 0.5 rWAR in 69 PAs last season, and Noesi's a major-league swingman now, with the potential for more (close to 9 K/9 during his minor-league career, with a sterling 5-plus K-to-BB ratio).

Both dealt from strength here-- the Mariners are stacked thicker in the rotation than the MFYs are behind the plate.

I like this deal a lot more if the Mariners go out and sign Fielder now.

This deal was done because they're not getting Fielder. They now have nowhere to play him. They need the DH spot for Montero. First base is Justin Smoak, the prospect they got from Texas for Cliff Lee.

If they wanted/expected to get Fielder, they would've just kept Pineda...

Yeah, the Mariners need help on offense just about everywhere except 1B/DH these days as Smoak, Montero, and maybe 2B Dustin Ackley could be their best offensive players next season. That's a decent young nucleus that they hopefully can grow on but the best stick after them might be Mike Carp.
Ichiro (FA after 2012) is now 38 y/o and his swing-at-everything style of offense isn't nearly as cute when he's hitting .270 instead of .370 (.310 OBA last year) ... and, gee, doesn't that Chone Figgins signing ($17 mil for '12 & '13 plus vesting option for '14) look like a swell idea these days? Most of the rest of the lineup struggled to maintain a collective .260 OBA with little power.

Cespedes might be a good get for this group. They're not one of the rumored suitors, are they?

Good trade for the yanks, Montero might have some bat but he's a DH-only... Nice to get rid of him for value before he shows his bat to be only mediocre as that would kill any remaining value.

Kuroda signing looks good too as it was only for 1 year, it can't hurt much even if he blows up.

He also was a bit homer-prone, so the ballpark switch could hut him more than it would most pitchers. Pineda had a 103 ERA+ last year, so it's not like he's been super elite right out of the box. Yes he's a young guy with a lot of upside, and the Reds gave up more to get Mat Latos, but Montero has similar upside too. If the Mariners learn from the Angels' mistakes regarding Mike Napoli, they won't be too quick to dismiss his value as a catcher.

I hope this trade with Seattle works out for the MFYs long term as well as the Jay Buhner trade did.
