IMO, if you're playing in the majors, these type of things shouldn't need to be explained. They are explained in little league, or at the high school level, or in college, or in rookie ball, or in single A, or in AA, or AAA...but this isn't the type of play you should be explaining in the highest level of the professional sport.

Muffy is the poster boy for a "DH in the NL" movement. I love the way he hits, but I wish he could play better defense somewhere.

There's an old baseball expression that says "You can't hide a bad fielder. The ball will always find him."
That seems the case with Muffy.

the thing i love about murphy is that he plays the game like i tend to in softball. with a healthy amount of effort and good intentions, but a glaring lack of good baseball instincts. i feel like when i watch murphy, i see him do things that i've done, or will eventually do.

that's probably not a good thing, but i love him just the same.

every time something dumb happens on the field i find my self thinking "pleasedon'tbemurphy pleasedon'tbemurphy pleasedon'tbemurphy". but it usually is.

When I coached kids baseball, I would tell the boys that they had to pay attention because the ball will find them. One game, the player in RF was inspecting the grass and not paying attention. I told him that the ball would find him and he said "not here." The next batter hit a line drive to RF, my player wasn't watching so it bounced past him for a HR.

That player's name was Daniel Murphy. (No it wasn't.)

Really, this Muffy thing is overshadowing the real goat of this game. I can think of a half-dozen other games that Muffy screwed up a lot worse.

He must've been reading Pelfrey's book last night, because that was a page right out of it.

He's been mostly living on the edge for a while now, but last night he just went out there and lept off of it.

I thought his ineffectiveness had to do with that awful follow through on his first pitch. I thought for sure he was hurt.

Sure, but the Murph thing was both preventable and part of an ongoing problem. It's amazing how he can screw up opposite sides of virtually the exact same play two days running.
Izzy's night, bad as it was, was at least the exception for him and not the rule.

Nor was that play the rule for Murphy. Nor was that play the sum total of his night.

Wayne Hagin's as easy to follow as a Japanese electronics instruction manual translated into English.

"Second base is not the base he runs to. He runs to third base after not stopping at second base." Like that.
