Hard to swallow, as in it's tough to get down immediately. The visual image of him hitting a game-winning home run in red stripes to complete another Philly playoff comeback produces an almost visceral disgust in me.

It's ultimately digestible, though, should they get good value. And if they'll overpay for him, with Brown or Bastardo? I'll pay the bus fare.

It'd be hard to take, but it would (theoretically) weaken the Phils down the road, so I'm okay with it.

I love Beltran, but he's always been a hired gun here. It's sad, but okay to see him go.

I know that he won't be there beyond this year... but man. if the phillies were to win the world series because of beltran... man. that would piss me off. oh and seeing beltran in a phillies uniform in the end of september at citifield... that would suck too

You're probably right, imbecile or not. But Jon Heyman, who's right more often than anybody else when it comes to predicting future Mets moves, imbecile or not, implies that the chances of the Mets landing Brown for Beltran are greater than one might ordinarily think.

Whatever happens, I give you my personal guarantee that Beltran won't be the marginal difference that makes the Phillies a better team than the Mets.

I'm naturally a little skeptical of pitching prospects and while I'd prefer to get the best we can get in a Beltran trade, I'd sure like a young outfielder who can kill it. That's why my deal for Starling Marte makes so much sense.

As I think I said a few days ago, I'm no longer absolutely convinced that the Mets won't offer Beltran a contract for 2012. (If they trade him I think it becomes a little less likely, but still possible.)

How much do we think he'll get as a free agent this winter? I know these things can be wildly unpredictable, but my guess would be around $9 per year for two years. I think the Mets can pay that, and I don't see that their next great young outfielder, whoever he may be, is going to be ready to take over in 2012. (Unless, I suppose, said player is someone who comes to the Mets in exchange for Beltran.)

Sure he's having a very good season this year, but those knees are what they are, and Carlos is in his mid-thirties. (He'll turn 35 next April.) His annual salary just about has to take a big drop from where it was. Doesn't it?
