TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Brian Wilson likes Beltran to GiantsESPN New York wrote:PHOENIX -- San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson hears his club may be interested in New York Mets right fielder Carlos Beltran.Wilson is all for it."He's a pretty awesome hitter," Wilson said after notching the save as the National League beat the American League, 5-1, on Tuesday night at Chase Field. "I have no qualms about it. Come on over. I don't want to be the guy that's traded, though. OK? Let's make sure that doesn't happen."Beltran, along with Mets teammate Jose Reyes, had accompanied the Giants contingent from San Francisco to Arizona after the teams completed the first half with a series.Wilson had made similar comments while reading the NL lineup on Fox, introducing Beltran as a player the Giants need to acquire."I didn't see that. I didn't hear that, either," Beltran said. "I mean, I know there's been a lot of rumors -- different cities. They always say I might end up in this city, in that city. But right now I'm part of the New York Mets, and we're playing good baseball." The Mets enter the second half one game over .500. They trail the division-leading Philadelphia Phillies by 11 games and the wild card-leading Braves by 7 games. Where will Beltran be in a month?"Where? I hope so in New York," Beltran replied. "I hope we continue to play good baseball. But, at the same time, if the team starts not playing good baseball, something might happen -- not only with me, but with a few of the other guys, like Francisco [Rodriguez]. They have mentioned Jose Reyes. But right now we cannot worry about that. We need to continue to play the game hard and focus on trying to win ballgames."Later Tuesday, Rodriguez was traded with cash to Milwaukee for two players to be named.

TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Carlos to the Phillies would be pretty hard to swallow. But, Dominic Brown would be a nice lozenge.

The visual image of him hitting a game-winning home run in red stripes to complete another Philly playoff comeback produces an almost visceral disgust in me.It's ultimately digestible, though, should they get good value. And if they'll overpay for him, with Brown or Bastardo? I'll pay the bus fare.

So I figure: Who the hell am I to say what other team should or shouldn't finish in first? Bring me the head of Dominic Brown, I say.*Since 1994

But Jon Heyman, who's right more often than anybody else when it comes to predicting future Mets moves, imbecile or not, implies that the chances of the Mets landing Brown for Beltran are greater than one might ordinarily think.Whatever happens, I give you my personal guarantee that Beltran won't be the marginal difference that makes the Phillies a better team than the Mets.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 I'd be more inclined to buy it if, say, Ruben Amaro's last name rhymed with "horas" or "morass."It would take ridiculously good leveraging of the supposed Giants/Braves interest by Sandy to squeeze anything of real substance out of the Phils, methinks.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 I'm naturally a little skeptical of pitching prospects and while I'd prefer to get the best we can get in a Beltran trade, I'd sure like a young outfielder who can kill it. That's why my deal for Starling Marte makes so much sense.

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 I want him to be traded to the Phillies for Domonic Brown and whatever other prospects we can get for him. Then I want him to suck for Philadelphia. Batting average under .120, dropping balls in RF all over the place. I want him to play so bad that he gets benched mid-September. I want him to come back to CitiField and fraternize with the Mets to such an extent that the Philly papers call him out on this, and the Phillies front office has to tell him to cool it. I want him to be questioned by the NY media about his poor play and I want him to answer with a knowing smile that prompts an investigation as to whether he is tanking on purpose. I want the Phillies to file a grievance.I want him to "accidentally" back his car into Shane Victorino's ridiculously pimped out BMW while backing out of the Citizen's Bank Ballpark parking lot causing him over $15k in damage, most of it relating to Shane's custom-made hood ornament.I want to hear that the investigation and grievance were ultimately abandoned for lack of evidence.I want the Phillies to lose in the playoffs when Beltran loses track of the number of outs and throws a ball into the stands, allowing 3 runs to score.I want him re-signed to an incentive laden deal three hours after players are allowed to file for free agency. At his press conference, I want him to talk about how excited he is to be back with the Mets, especially in light of the extension Reyes signed during the ten day exclusive window.I want to read reports that Boras, Beltran and Alderson are in a corner snickering with each other, then suddenly shush each other when Ruben Amaro Jr. walks by. In October 2012, I want Beltran to talk about how the World Series MVP crown means nothing to him, he's just happy that the Mets are champions. This is what I want for Carlos Beltran.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 As I think I said a few days ago, I'm no longer absolutely convinced that the Mets won't offer Beltran a contract for 2012. (If they trade him I think it becomes a little less likely, but still possible.)How much do we think he'll get as a free agent this winter? I know these things can be wildly unpredictable, but my guess would be around $9 per year for two years. I think the Mets can pay that, and I don't see that their next great young outfielder, whoever he may be, is going to be ready to take over in 2012. (Unless, I suppose, said player is someone who comes to the Mets in exchange for Beltran.) Sure he's having a very good season this year, but those knees are what they are, and Carlos is in his mid-thirties. (He'll turn 35 next April.) His annual salary just about has to take a big drop from where it was. Doesn't it?
