The one-hour special, titled �DEREK JETER 3K,� will take viewers behind the scenes as Jeter attempts to reach the milestone. With the cooperation of Derek Jeter and the Yankees, MLB Productions will have extensive access to Jeter both at and away from the ballpark. He has agreed to allow MLB Productions camera crews to follow him on multiple occasions and in a variety of settings, including in his home and during rehabilitation from a calf injury. �DEREK JETER 3K� also will feature exclusive interview footage with the Yankee captain in the ensuing days after he achieves the milestone. Produced by MLB Productions in collaboration with HBO Sports, �DEREK JETER 3K� will include reflections on Jeter�s entire career, including footage in the MLB Productions archives from his early days with the Yankees through his five World Series Championships. The special will include new interviews with his family and friends as well as Yankees executives, Legends and teammates such as Hal Steinbrenner, Brian Cashman, Joe Girardi, Joe Torre, Curtis Granderson, Mariano Rivera, Dave Winfield, Minka Kelly, Billy Crystal, and many more. The special will debut on HBO a few weeks after the milestone is reached. Despite the above Jeter-propaganda programming, Michael Kay actually said today that the media is "sharpening its claws"to get Jeter because the media loves to build up its heroes to knock them down."

Those aren't exact quotes because I was momentarily stunned at the stupidity of Kay--stupid comments even by his standards.

Embarrassed the kids last night. We were driving somewhere and a radio host was trying to make the case that Jeter was the best shortshop ever, and that Jose Reyes at this best will never touch Jeter's four best seasons and was going on about the intangables.

I started ranting, and my daughter said, "Dad, you realize your window is down, right?"

But this is outrageous!

and then ranted about the negative treatment he's getting from some and part of his justification was he's 16th in BA of all qualifying SS. i.e. he's not a disaster yet so why are we whining?

Johnette Howard offers a similar "everybody wants to knock him" premise and then proceeds to gush like, well, everybody.

So Derek Jeter ain't what he used to be. What athlete at 37 is? For the past few years some of Jeter's big league peers have continually voted him among baseball's most overrated players in Sports Illustrated's annual poll -- something they won't say to his face. But to read back over a ton of Jeter stories as he nears 3,000 hits is to be struck by how the details of how good Jeter was are forgotten. The contention that Jeter has been very, very good has been repeated so much as accepted wisdom, it's as if that has created this big contourless slab called Jeter's Great Career, a notion that has come under increasing attack as he's slipped a bit with age. With Jeter on the threshold of a historic milestone only 27 other big leaguers have reached, this would be a good time to revisit the easily forgotten particulars of how Jeter got here. And why he's headed to the Hall of Fame ...
