Jose vs. David vs. the Krane

With his fifth-inning infield single off Ryan Dempster in Chicago, Jose Reyes last night passed David Wright for third place on the all-time Mets hit list. He also moved within five hits of Cleon Jones in second place.

METS ALL-TIME HIT LEADERS
Through 5/24/2011

1. Ed Kranepool 1,418
2. Cleon Jones 1,188
3. JOSE REYES 1,183
4. DAVID WRIGHT 1,182

Jose had the advantage of David being on the Disabled List, which is where Jose sat when David passed Jose on September 3, 2009 with a single to right off Matt Herges at Colorado. David, incidentally, spotted Jose (first hit: June 10, 2003) a 113-hit lead before putting his first hit on the board on July 22, 2004.

Breaks my heart to think they may not be going at it in the quest to pass Ed Kranepool and then to see who gets to 2,000 first.

Ed Kranepool -- Teflon Eddie.

I don't doubt he puppetmastered the Madoff debacle just to make sure Fred would have to let Jose go...just as he was mentally fracturing David's lower back.

Who do you think whispered in Steve Phillips' ear to let Fonzie walk?

My first thought on seeing this thread: "What the fuck did Kranepool say now?"

I want to give this optimism carryon a go for a while.

I see no reason at all why Reyes will not only surpass Edward Kranepool on the hit list but he'll get 2000 hits as a Mets player.

I don't share the Reyes optimism, but...

David's only 236 away and he's signed through next year (and then still has a club option).

I believe that if he's healthy he will eventually be the Mets hits leader.

Yes, that's fine. Let's get rid of those guys so that when Yankees fans talk about their Ruthian, literally, records and mention guys like Gehrig in the record books we can talk about our Ed Kranepool.

Y'all are so Yankee-mindsetted. I'm hoping to retain them for the sake of victory, more than to pimp out the record book in the face of Yankee fans.

Mets records for Mets records sake. And the winning -- that would be nice, too.

I have this fear that Wright will be gone after next year, too.

I was 14 when Seaver was traded. My daughter, a huge David Wright fan, will be 14 next year.

I hate it when history repeats itself...

yeah. I don't really mean it as a Yankee comparison. I've been watching their hits flip flop for a while now, and the idea that you could've a friendly 'race' to Kranepool and to 1500 and to 2000 with the fun-loving left side of the infield for years to come has to be marketing gold no?

I envision a Sosa-McGwire type race to 2000 in 3-4 years with them having fun with it. Wright joking that Reyes has the advantage because he bats first. Reyes snipes back with "You have more WS hits though!"

Even with that fear...if he can't pick up 236 more hits over the next season and a half, he will have regressed to league average at best...or he will have been majorily injured.

That's not the point. Especially in a large market, cornerstones like Wright and Reyes shouldn't go anywhere

Yeah! That! Come on, Mets. Don't be a dick. Just effin' sign these guys.

Carlos Beltran at No. 13, with 819, unlikely to catch Keith Hernandez (939) for twelfth before he departs.

Next among active Mets on the franchise hits list:

T-61. Angel Pagan 309
95. Daniel Murphy 209
T-108. Ike Davis 177
T-153. Jason Bay 112
T-168. Josh Thole 96 (tied with Willie Mays)
T-220. Nick Evans 54
227. Ruben Tejada 51

So even with the Krane providing the relatively low ceiling, it's never easy to keep Mets around long enough to get up in Ed's rarefied air...which is why it will break my heart if the two players within hitting distance of Eddie doesn't get a shot at breaking the record.

I'm dying over here. Teflon Eddie, "What did Kranepool say", "blink if Ceetar has a gun to your head". I'm not quite as suicidal as I was a few minutes ago.

Please add a poll to this thread: First to break the Met hit record.
a) Jose Reyes
B) David Wright
c) Ike Davis
d) MiniKnight

Should have been reading here G.C., we've been tracking this for years.

Reyes' all time franchise run record is soft and reflects, more than anything else, the Mets historical failure to develop and keep long-term, offensive powerhouse players. Reyes' 660+ runs wouldn't top, or even come close, to matching the record holders in runs scored for any of the Mets' expansion contemporaries, or any of the four 1969 expansion teams:

Angels - Garrett Anderson 1,024
Colt .45s/Astros - Craig Biggio 1,844
new Senators/Rangers - Rafael Palmeiro 958
Pilots/Brewers - Robin Yount 1,632
Royals - George Brett 1,583
Padres - Tony Gwynn 1,383
Expos/Nationals - Tim Raines 947
