The Mets passed the Burghers in the overall standings last night, pulling into a tie with the sliding Rockies --- 2-8 over the last ten --- leaving our team five and a half back and 19 net behind.

Next up, if we can keep climibing and make a move this series, is Cincinnati, 3.5 games off the pace and also 2-8 over the last ten.

The hottest team in the league right now is Arizona, winners of seven in a row and nine of their last 10, and moving into first place over the champeen Giants in the west. The Mets swept the 'Backs in April and return to Arizona for more of that action in August. Eight games against the Pirates? This may be a good time to make a move, with or without thier big bats.

Passed two teams in Wild Card standings last night --- Cincinnati and Washington (who they also passed in the division, natch, to move --- woo, hoo! --- into third place). They now sit five games out of the Wild Card hunt and in fifth place.

Your best friends tonight are the Toronto Blue Jays, contesting at home with the visiting Pirates, who improbably sit a half game ahead of the Mets. Lefty Paul Maholm (4-8, 3.21) is up against righty Brandon Morrow (3-4, 4.90).

So, let me get this straight. Pittsburgh is five games ahead of Cincinnati, but Cincinnati is more likely to win the wild card.

Arizona is only 3 1/2 games behind Atlanta and has no other team to catch, but has a less than 1-in-20 chance of winning the wild card.

I'm sure the calculations consider things like schedule, player quality, run differentials, etc., etc., etc. in addition to the win-loss record. And, of course, they should. But it's going to take some convincing to make me believe there isn't a healthy dose of bullshit included in their math as well.


OE - some of the Arizona story is probably that if they catch the Braves, they've got a good chance of catching the Giants and making the playoffs as a division winner. But that doesn't explain the Pittsburgh/Cincinnati difference.

Some of Pittsburgh's chances at the Wild Card are absorbed into their at-press-time greater (and unshown) chances of winning the division.

I mean, we're talking about one tenth of one percent, but it works greater in the macro, where Atlanta has a greater chance of winning the wildcard (68.5%) then does Philadelphia (13.7%), because Phillie is 85.2% likely to win the division.

My first thought was that that was a reference to the 2004 presidential election, but I'm thinking it's probably actually some Irish thing.

It is , the Dubs are Dublin and they will be paying Kerry in the All -Ireland Gaelic football Final although IIRC Duan is not big on the GAA.Still, I imagine it will be hard to avoid the hype and buildup to this game.

Just passed Cincinnati and Los angeles in the overall standings.

Next up is San Francisco, 4 1/2 games ahead, up 1-0 on the Diamondbacks in the seventh as we speak.
