ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Heartbreaking. Maybe they can summon up to try again one day.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Heartbreaking is right, I can't imagine going through this in public.

Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 The player that always comes to mind regarding players battling neuropsychiatric disorders is http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/eisenji01.shtml Jim Eisenreich. He was a very good player, that had his career sidetracked by Tourettes Syndrome. His symptoms were intensified by being before large crowds (an obvious problem for a major leaguer) and were severe enough to force his retirment in 1984 at age 25. He eventually was able to return to baseball in 1987 and had a long and successful career.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Adam Rubin has a few updates:Adam Rubin wrote:"As I just told him [Jose Reyes] earlier today, and as I said the other day, to get him for one game tonight or tomorrow and then lose him for three weeks is just stupid," Collins said. "I'm going to watch him run 100 percent before he gets back in there."Also on the injury front with the Mets, third baseman David Wright, who is working his way back into playing shape from a lower-back stress fracture, will wait until next week to enter official minor league rehab games. Collins previously had floated later this week as a possible date for minor league games. The organization opted to proceed more cautiously with ramping up baseball activities since Wright has largely been idle for six weeks following the discovery of the stress fracture."They don't want to push him too hard," Collins said. "... You're talking about a guy that hasn't run in six weeks. We've got to get his legs back underneath him before a lot of stuff takes place."First baseman Ike Davis will wait until next week to seriously test his left ankle running. Davis is at home in the Phoenix area. If discomfort related to cartilage damage resurfaces when Davis attempts to run, Davis likely will have season-ending surgery."Ike is progressing better," Collins said. "Now that he is out of the boot, he actually is getting more flexibility in the ankle, feeling better."Left-hander Johan Santana again threw off a mound in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Monday. Wright stood in the batter's box and tracked pitches at one point. Alderson had indicated Santana would begin a spring-training-like regimen once he had thrown a pair of mound sessions without discomfort in his surgically repaired left shoulder. Santana had thrown off a mound last Wednesday as well, so that process may be ready to begin.

It seems like most of you don't believe in the Mets anyway, so why not have Johan throwing 'rehab' games in the major leagues in September? (And right now we're talking about 6 weeks or so, which is actually closer to the middle of August. )Regardless, you don't get better by being idle. This is more rehab than recovery, in that he needs to build up muscles and arm strength and get his shoulder and all related throwing muscles back into shape.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 The news on Wright is hardly encouraging if you were hoping he'd be back in July.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 If he starts playing minor league rehab games next week, I don't see any reason (barring a setback) that he won't be back in July.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 But he's not even running yet right?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Running isn't that big a deal. You're a young athlete and you can get your legs in shape in a week or so. You can even DH while still getting back into gameshape. My greater concern is the torque of swinging a bat and it's effect on the back.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Are you thinking that running could re-injure the back?
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Edgy DC wrote:Are you thinking that running could re-injure the back?not really thinking that but it's a thought , to me it just seems fundamental that running is a first step in recovery, and with the nature of his injury running hard would seem a requirement.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 It depends on the injury. I imagine Johan Santana, for instance, was running months before he picked up a ball. But it's not like his leg was hurt here. They just needed to restrict running to keep the impact off the back. We'll see.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 I'm sure we'll know a lot more about what he's capable of after a few rehab games. And yes, I do think it's worthwhile.

ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Would you want Santana warming up a few days a week in the pen???
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Ashie62 wrote:Would you want Santana warming up a few days a week in the pen???You'd figure out a specific plan with him. You wouldn't warm him up without bringing him in.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Giving him a few bullpen appearances in lieu of a minor league rehab start or two may be okay, as long as it's a step towards returning him to the big league rotation. If the Mets are going to hang in the Wild Card race, they will want Santana starting. And if they don't, then he might as well start. Meaningless starts are better for him, I would think, than meaningless relief appearances.

I think what he needs is merely to do it. I'm not sure he needs "starts" or "50 IP" or anything. Just apperances in which he warms up, throws the ball at the plate, and feels fine the next day. Can't rely on him for anything, so I'm not qutie sure if the Mets are in a playoff race of some kind that you can/should shove him into the rotation and demand he pitch like an Ace. Should the Mets be allowing him to throw 100 pitches? 110? He's at 88 throw 6. Pull him? what if he's at 107 with 1 out and a runner on first and second with a 4-2 lead in the 7th? Push him? Pull him? In the bullpen you get a better chance at controlling when and how long he's going to pitch. "You've got the first inning after the starter today" and put him out there. Or have him close out the game. If the Mets are in it, I'm not sure a 5IP "rehab-like" start from Santana forcing extra bullpen innings is a good idea either.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Starts can be scheduled as well. If the Mets are in any semblance of a competition, the stituaton wil dictate usage, and that would help nobiddy.I think we're overthinking this.
