Time for Russell Martin's annual excuse for why his play with the Dodgers went south
January 17, 2011 | 2:39 pm

Oh, so that was the problem. Silly us.

It wasn't that Russell Martin was too thin, or too heavy; it wasn't that he was trying too hard to pull the ball or go to the opposite field.

The poor guy was distracted.

Why didn't we realize this? Surely the signs were everywhere. Don't you just feel so stupid?

Yep, our favorite ex-Dodgers catcher has his excuse 2011: He was lacking subconscious motivation because of his personal life.

"I had some distractions that maybe led me not to have that same drive that I've had in the past," Martin told Canada's National Post. "Really, that's all it is, honestly. I didn't train quite as -- I trained hard, but before, nobody trained as hard as I did."

That's it!

It was personal issues. You know, because no one else has those. It's the explanation he gave for why he went from budding star to pure mediocrity.

Mostly, anyway. He didn't exactly explain to the National Post what those distractions were.

"There's some things that you keep for yourself," Martin said. "Those distractions, they're personal -- personal issues in my life that not everybody needs to know about."

That's understandable, of course. If they choose, celebrities are entitled to a sense of privacy in their personal life.

Just don't elect to keep it private, and then try to hide behind it.

This way, of course, Martin is simply leaving those "distractions" open to speculation, which can be a tough gambit.

Once there was a concern in some quarters that he was too much the Hollywood party guy. Then it was his relationship with ridiculously hot Canadian supermodel Marikym Hervieux.

Whatever, it seems a tad too convenient that Martin has an annual excuse for why he went from having an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of .843 in 2007 to .680 the last two seasons. He doesn't turn 28 until next month.

Wrote the National Post: "Whatever those west-coast distractions were, he insists they are behind him. 'I feel like I'm back where I need to be. Just mentally, I feel better.'"

Good for him, I guess. Good for the Yankees. New York is known for its own distractions, so good luck with that.

Should he struggle in the Big Apple, though, why do I suspect he'll have an excuse?

The thread title is redundant of course. I think Martin was always a bit of a douchebag, now there is no question.

I had to google her. Just to see for myself. To fact check this article.

Aw shoot, I was going to start this thread this year as "Let's have a toast for the MFY-lovin' douchebags!"

This is a different thread than that one. This thread is about the MFY douchebags themselves (Posada, Jeter, Steinbrenner, Ruth, Berra, etc).

The one you want, about douchebags who root for the MFYs, commit crimes wearing MFY gear, interfere with balls with play etc etc etc is here ( http://www.cranepoolforum.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15312 ).

It's honest, sure. But isn't this just a really, really strange way to answer the questions at the guy's welcome press conference?

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he did not want to sign Rafael Soriano because he didn't feel paying closer money to the team's setup man made sense. And, in the end, Cashman said he did not participate in negotiations with Soriano's agent, Scott Boras.

"I didn't recommend [the deal]," Cashman said after the team officially introduced Soriano as their eighth-inning man in front of closer Mariano Rivera.

Cashman's statements were made after the formal introduction and not on the dais directly in front of Soriano.

That's incredible. I almost want to applaud Cashman because of the 4 people apparently making decisions for the MFYs, he's got to know best that this was an incredibly short-sighted move and could very easily esplode in their faces.

Check out what Head Douche Randy Levine had to say:

While Hal and Hank Steinbrenner were not present at the press conference, Levine emphasized that there were no problems between Cashman and ownership.

"In the end, there is one thing that we all agree -- that [Cashman] said, we all said --- he makes the Yankees a lot better," Levine said. "That's what we have to do every day.

"Hal and Hank, myself, everyone has a sacred obligation to our fans to make the team better in any way we can," Levine said. "The Yankee brand is important. There are fans all over the world. From George Steinbrenner on, we have to put the best product we possibly can put on the line. Cash looks at it from baseball operations, as he should. We look at it as running a $5 billion company. Really, the issue came down to, does this make the Yankees better?"

Money cures so many ills. you've got prolonged negotiations and hardballing the captain of the team. a needed pitcher pulling a Brett Favre, The marquis free agent spurning their offer, players influencing signings, a GM without full autonomy and owners free to give out rediculous contracts whenever they feel like it.

am I missing anything? geeze, can you imagine how much of a mess they'd look like if they hadn't made the playoffs/WS recently?

It's like he's inflicted with Likability Asperger's-- as much coaching as he gets, and as much as he wants so badly to be liked... there are things about charm and image he just can't read or see on his own.

CHAPTER FOUR: Don't point out others' mistakes.

Cameron Diaz is cuddling and feeding him salty buttered treats, and Alex thinks this is a bad thing? I'd want that shown on that Texas-sized Jumbotron they have at that stadium. It would be a thing if he was doing that with, say Bea Arthur or Miley Curtis. But Cameron Diaz?

I've got a tip for Alex, and anyone else who doesn't like being on TV: don't go to public events in large stadia that are being televised with about 500 cameras.
