Arizona postpones game after shooting

ESPN.com news services

Arizona postponed its game against Stanford on Saturday after U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head earlier in the day.

An assailant opened fire outside a grocery store in Tucson, Ariz., while Giffords met with constituents, killing six people, including a 9-year-old girl and a federal judge, and wounding several others.

The 9-year-old was identified as Christina Taylor Green, the granddaughter of former Major League Baseball player and manager Dallas Green.

"The university feels the game should be delayed with deep respect to the victims and families impacted by this tragedy," Arizona athletics director Greg Byrne said.

The game was rescheduled for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET. It will still be televised by Fox Sports Arizona and Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

Arizona's normal game security forces for a game are involved with the shooting incident, Byrne said.

Giffords, 40, was among 13 victims wounded in the shooting, federal law enforcement sources said. University Medical Center said her outlook was "optimistic" and that she was responding to commands from doctors.

Killing a member of the Met family. Killing a face of hope. Two more levels in which to be very sick over this.

My daughter is a nine-year-old girl. Her friends are nine-year-old girls. The kids on the softball team I managed last spring were also in that age group. I'm at a stage of my life where I'm very familiar with nine-year-old girls, and it makes it very easy for me to imagine what that poor kid was like. How anyone could shoot a bullet at a nine-year-old girl is unimaginable.

Dallas Green: "I can't believe this could happen to any nine-year-old, much less our own. The worst thing to ever happen to us."

The young girls parents were on the news last night, amazing people....I paraphrase...."my daughter was born on a tragic day and her life ended in tragedy but those are bookends to a great nine years"...... it was a moment to watch

I wrote one paragraph in a blog response and I found myself tearing up when I hit submit.

I don't know how anybody with a girl that age can write or speak about it, or not squeeze the beans out of their daughter.

I had to turn off my phone for a minute, because I'm sitting here on the edge of tears. That story is why you have kids; there's nothing like those moments. I need to go take a walk for a minute.

Things like this make me question the "no cruel or unusual punishment" bit.

Guys like this should be kept alive as long as possible and viciously tortured for 12 hours every day.

It's an amazing thing, being a parent.

AZ House Senate unanimously passes legislation stopping Westbro church from protesting at Christina Green's funeral. Governor Brewer expected to sign it.

Those vile bastards will probably challenge it.
